Steam Crashes

Hello,

I currently have a major problem with Steam, everytime I start Steam there is MS-DOS pop-up that says: File too big for memory.

The problem started to occur around 9:30 PM EST Tonight, I clicked on the Steam.exe the update Steam pop-up shows up and then the computer competlly reboot for no reason. .Right now I'm running some scans and anti-malware on my computer to see where the problem is, because some say it might be a virus.

I'm running on Windows XP SP3 btw.

Any clue on that ?

Could we get all of your system specifications?

If you don't know how to find them, please:

1. Open the Start Menu.
2. Find the 'Run' entry and click it.
3. Type in msinfo32 and hit enter.
4. Take a screenshot of the first page that opened and post it here.

I don't think any of my hardware info is necessary (private reasons, hope you understand)...
Anyways, I finished all the virus scans: Result: No virus found.
So, it's not a virus, it's a problem with Steam itself.
I will try Uninstalling it and maybe reinstall it see if it's work.

Ok problem solved, reinstalled the whole thing, but now need to reinstall all my games.

Next time you reinstall Steam, make sure you backup your steamapps folder first.

i've gotten that popup before. although not a dos one. Usually it comes up in the bottom corner saying its trying to clear some memory or something along those lines.

this is why they ask for your computer specs. With a problem like this if you can at least state how much memory you have, that should be sufficient.

The problem is probably exactly as it states, program to big for memory.

If your trying to run to many programs at once you won't have enough memory when trying to run steam, if you overload your memory it will crash your computer sometimes.
Reinstalling may help right now, but if its not a virus or faulty program it will come back. Try closing down some programs you don't need while running steam, or get some more memory.
I have 3gb of memory. I'm using around 50% of it already running firefox, excel, notepad++, steam msn, and a few background things to run different things on my laptop. I shut down what I don't need when using memory intensive programs like games, photoshop, inventor, visual studio,etc.

Next time you reinstall Steam, make sure you backup your steamapps folder first.

Already got some backups but to lazy to put them back in place, and alteast it did a cleanup instead of using 40 Gb on my hard drive now I have only 6 Gb used for Steam, and btw psychochild I have 2 Gig of Ram and I had no program opened when I opened Steam the only thing that Was running was my anti-virus that's all
