TF2 is about the TEAM

You know what I hate, is when a soldier camps the vents...oh wait this is the wrong place for that. This thread is about spies and any other class not being helpful, not about soldiers staying by 1 point camping instead of pushing forward...and yes there are a ton of them on BM (you know who you are ;) )

I don't know how much I agree with your assessment FeatherFrog.

If someone's a bad spy (relative to other players), the team needs a medic/demo/whatever, they might not be the best at those either and you've got the same exact problem as before. Maybe the Spy is their personally best/most skilled class.

It's just a game. If a team has 16 Spys, OK, let's try and fix that. If the team keeps getting mowed down, try and make a class change and see what you can do. Rally someone else to help you out. I have no idea how good any of the other players on my team are with any other class. I'll trust them to make the switch. What I do know are my own strengths and weaknesses with each class. If I think I can help the team as a whole by being a Spy with three other Spys on the team, then I'm going to do that. Trial and error on my part, but I won't dictate how someone else should be playing because for all I know, they're trying their best.

Do what you can to turn the tide, see if someone can help you out, and just roll with whatever happens. Life's too short to stress yourself out over a video game.

This.

I have a few classes that I play fairly well, and a few classes that I just don't enjoy playing at all. Even if my team is in desperate need of demomen, I probably won't be switching because I simply can't help my team as a demoman.

Keep in mind that there are all skill levels in the game. There are folks that are just starting out with TF2 - and there might even be folks (like me) who have never played an FPS game before and need a bit (or more ;)) of practice before they feel comfortable with even one class.

The eGO servers are supposed to be a haven from the brutal atmosphere present elsewhere. Before I found the eGO servers, I quit many a game very discouraged; people were absolutely awful to me because I didn't yet know what would be helpful to the team, and I didn't really know what I was doing with any of the classes. They never helped me learn, never showed me how, never encouraged - they just judged, found me unworthy, and hammered me until I left.

In the eGO servers, I mostly found encouragement and helpful advice instead of verbal flaying and scorn. It was "a better place for the sentry would be here" instead of "God! You stupid noob! You're the most useless, worthless, dumbest, worst engineer EVER!!! (insert various profanities and crude references to my being female here)". You don't know how many of these "noobs" and "useless spies" you're deriding are in the same situation I was, so be kind and helpful and tolerant.

Encouragement and helpful advice are always going to be better than complaining "Some of you useless spies/snipers/scouts change class." There's a difference between encouraging and offering advice, and trying to bully your team into doing what you want, how you want it done. And there's absolutely no point in making folks feel unwanted, useless, or worthless.

Lead by example. Instead of whining repeatedly that "yet again, we have no sentry in our hayroom *big fat sigh*" and trying to force or guilt someone else into going engie and building in the hayroom, you switch and do it the way you like. Don't berate someone else for not doing it the way you would.

me! hahah.

Okay guys. I'm not talking about people who are good at what they do.

I'm talking about in general (if you're a great sniper, good. a great spy, even better)

When my team's being dominated. You will not catch me as a sniper or a spy just because I dont want to die, and I want to keep my KD ratio. You'll see me as a soldier, trying to push back the horde from the other team.

I'm just saying. sometimes Rocket, nade, minigun spam to push back the other team is credit to the team.

-all these scenarios are about BM. cuz Black mesa's is where its at! :)

Feather I get your point, that can be aggravating. To me, more important than what class you are is what you are doing.
How many times on BM do you see guys grate camping the other side of the map when the 4th point is capping, and the 5th is being stalked? I know area denial can be a good tactic, but only if the area in question is important at the time.

Anyway, it's been said a million times; you can't force any given group of people to be team players at any given time. Occasionally I luck into that great game experience when everyone (on both teams) is working in unison, to achieve the team goal, that's why I keep coming back! And it happens on eGO servers more often than most others.

I agree with this as I'm always on blackmesa. Now I have won games thanks to the spies when people were camping us and the spy managed to sneak out and cap points. But chances are the spy or sniper won't make it out, and most of the time they are sitting in a position such that the sniper gets mowed down before he can even see them. Its one of those things you just :facewall: when you go into class change and don't see a heavy or medic or demo or soldier.

I do have to admit it is funny to watch a scout run out the door only to get blown up as soon as he hits the door frame, over and over and over.

O another note that may actually help, pay attention to your chat and turn up your volume and listen to what your team is saying. I've seen or been involved many times in trying to set up in position to clear out the campers and have a mate open the door at just the right moment, and then have someone run through and open the door and me or they get blown up instead.

Honestly atleast learn how to play all the classes, especially if playing blackmesa. Different classes are useful at different points around that map(ie snipers on A, scouts on your first cap so you can get to A first, demos soldiers heavys when pushing for the last, etc etc.)

Something I keep meaning to ask, hopefully someone can clarify this. I haven't been on in a few days so I can't remember completely, but that msg that comes up when joining the server, does it not state that spawn camping isn't allowed? if it does whats the def of spawn camping(i know some maps spawn goes right into open territory and with black mesa spawn goes into other safe rooms)

it doesn't matter if someone can play sniper so well, they can no-scope a guy from a cross the map while running around like a MAD MAN... if you don't care about the team, you're going to be the one gettin killed!

the point was, if your team needs medic, BE A MEDIC. if your team needs demo, BE A DEMO. help the team, THEN you can switch to a class that you like to play.

My "point" was that Snipers can be just as useful for a team as let's say Demomen.

Also there are other helpful classes than Medics. People seem to be posessed by them.

lol easy points thats why. I played a 1.5 hour game on black mesa the other day. got over 200 points in the first 5 minutes. afk'd, cuz i got a phone call, for like 30 mins and i came back and only 1 guy on the other team had more points cuz he was mowing down people as a heavy.

Sometimes it can't be helped if the teams are stacked, but that is true feather; you need to choose an appropriate class for the situation.

I play engie A LOT on blackmesa. When, my team is at a loss of capture points, i get sentry guns in weird places to halt the rush of the other team, from protecting their points. I am a team player, but i will not change what i like to play, and play well, because there is no medic.

Simplest way for me to say this is..... If it offends someone, oh well.

If you are the guy yelling of the mic, or typing in team chat for someone else to change class and be a medic, maybe you should take your own advice, and become to medic.

Not everyone wants to be a medic, and be chase after people all the time, and at the same time be told you arent doing your job because you didnt make it to them in time. I like medic once in awhile, but trying to heal 15 other people, when you have 14 screaming for you, but run away from you rather then come to you, is not fun for me.....

I call shenanigans. There is no way you got 200 points in 5 minutes on BlackMesa!

While this is a good point, sometimes (not all the time, however) you're already doing another job that is credit to team, such as being the team's only Engineer, you're already playing Medic, or you're the only Demoman/Soldier. Something among those lines. As long as you're nice about the way you ask, everything should be fine. However, if worse comes to worse...

...Check to see if the server's full, and if not, give one of the Medics on your friends list a quick call. :P

i'm serious i couldn't figure it out either. i couldn't remember how to take screenshots or i would have. i was at like 200 points and everyone was still down around 10. maybe something goofed i dunno.

Spawn camping always has been and always will be a valid tactic. :)

Wow - I totally agree Feather. I don't think you can stress the "team" part enough.

When your entire team is getting slaughtered (along with yourself), you know it's time to change things up a bit.

F5 for screens. and it would be found in your steam folder.

Console command: bind f5 jpeg
to make the screenies come out in jpeg. or they're in this weird format... that is annoying

You sure it wasnt your ping? =P

yes, you can help your team out, but like Opeth said, it is skill, not the class usually

if I should be a pyro to spycheck, while I could be a heavy or a demo, it is a bit of a problem, since my skills are much greater in those classes than as a pyro who is just for the spychecking.

Should I change class then or tell another person to switch?
