This morning, my girlfriend's PC booted to say that windows couldn't be found, and she needed to put in the Installation disk in order to continue.

She didn't clear her HD or anything, but put the CD in.

Now, it worked, but shows as a new profile, as if it were a new computer.

Are all her previous files and everything gone, or can she get to them?

it's possible that it created a new profile that she logged into (now) and all her files are still there in her old profile.

Look in C:\Documents & Settings for her old profile ;) or C:\Users if it's Vista/7

The files have been found, but a new problem arises.

I think she was on Vista before, but used an XP disk.
What now? haha

*things work, but she isn't sure she can get files from old profile/login to old profile or anything

well if things work, i guess it doesn't matter what disk she used. You should be able to copy/paste all her files from old profile to the new one. (So she can access them easily again)

Yeah she had Vista before.
She says alot of files aren't working, also said its not a new profile like the ones you log in and out of, they're just there.

I.e. office and itunes etc won't work, so she'll have to re-install or something

Is there a way to get past that so everything works immediately again?
(She has no vista disk btw, just XP. vista came loaded on the pc)

if office/itunes etc aren't working properly, i'm guessing the registry got messed up, would be easiest(and probably faster) to just reinstall the programs that are having issues
