Music Headphones

My headphones I use for my mp3 player are falling apart. They are the default ipod headphones, and aren't doing the music justice lol (especially since the majority of the songs on my mp3 player are not mp3s but FLAC)

So this holiday season I am looking to buy headphones. Anyone know of any great headphones?
I am not looking for any specific design yet (like over-ear, in-ear, etc) I am keeping it very general, but I am looking for great audio quality.

these are like a neon advertising board shouting "i have an MP3 play please rob me". if you wear them on the street, go for something small skull candy do good in ear head phones aswell.

the akg K 271 MK II are freaking amazing headphones i use them in the studio daily there almost as accurate as my 824's monitor speakers

well of course we dont even know the guys price range. how much r u lookin 2 spend on the headphones? i got some sweet sennheiser headphones from newegg for $22 (originally $40). here they are: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826106306. the only issue i have w/ them is that they like 2 slide off the front of my head for some odd reason, but i wouldnt take an egg off for that. the sound from them is simply amazing. i got them id say a few weeks ago & i use em for my dj gigs & will hopefully keep them for quite a while, not to mention that they come w/ a 2 yr warranty. name me another company that does that? if there is, then great, but i dont think they make headphones w/ this great quality for this low of a price.

Please don't buy SkullCandy. If you want some quality headphones buy these: $80 retail. Its on the lower end of the high priced super quality headphones (like $100+ for Shures).
I received a pair as a grad gift and I've never put them down since. Comes with a nice case and a nifty earwax cleaner! It comes with 4 different sized elliptical shaped earbuds that fiy my ears perfectly.
The sound isn't as bass heavy as some of cheaper earbuds are and has a really nice balanced sound which is what you want since you're using FLAC.

2) What kind of music you listen to? Different headphones are better for different things
3) How you will be using them? (Portability a big issue or will you be okay with DJ headphones)

Please like others have said do not buy Skull Candy or Bose. No offense to the others but to be blunt people who don't know headphones buy those two brands. Especially BOSE, their marketing power is ridiculous.

if youre a big basshead but still prefer a balanced soundstage, go with the Beyerdynamic DT770's - amazing! The bass is powerful and pronounced, but doesnt muddy up the low-midrange. DT770's > bose/sennheiser... along the same lines as the K271's

the 271's have less pronounced bass but still very amazing cans. If you've never had cans >$30 you probably wont care about/notice the difference between them.

whatever you do, if you plan to go in public with them, get CLOSED cans or they will be robbing you out of hate and not envy lol

All good choices but once you start talk Beyers we are getting into some pricey stuff (for most people). I'm sure it won't be a shocker that many of those headphones hit upwards of $200. Lets wait for a budget and music preferences before we start slamming him with pricey cans

Also if you don't know what closed vs open is. Closed headphones don't leak any sound out. Open headphones are like speakers placed closed to your ears, the sound leaks out easily. Not good for being out in public imo.

but yes, Head-fi.org is a great place to start your research. There is a thread here: http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f4/headphone-buyers-guide-271258/ about what they think are the best cans or earphones are for certain price-points. If you don't have a dedicated amp, look for the ones with a 1 next to them.

wow - those are some nice cans right there! I have a set of HD280's myself and love them.

When I think of MP3 player headphones, I usually think of 'smaller' ear-bud types. The bigger full-size (especially the 64ohm) ones really draw down an MP3 player's battery.

I've been using the Sennheiser CX300 headphones for a while now. They're in-ear, noise canceling, and wow they have amazing bass, really overall good quality audio. Anyone who buys an iPod and uses the included headbuds is a short-bus candidate :O

Becasue they've been around for so long, you can pick up a pair on eBay for easily $15.00. Don't let the small size fool you, these things sound amazing.

ya i use the akg 271's at home and in the studio but for just my ipod i use audio audio technica ath-m3x's because there arent too big and are cheap enoughs to replace if i kill them im my everyday run about.

i mentioned a lot of higher end stuff becuase the orginall poster mentioned that he uses wav and flac files so i can olny assume that he want's some nice cans if useing lossless audio files.

I posted a sick deal with the Ultimate Ears SuperFI 10s for $99. If i lived in America I would totally have been all over them.

Watch out for the sennheiser's CX300 there are a LOT of fakes out there, same goes with the brand Shure. If it seems like it's way too cheap make a profit, it probably is.

Head Direct RE0's are a great deal at $89 shipped. They have gotten really positive reviews and I would buy them if I didn't have something comparable. Apparently they are equal to some 300-400 IEMs. Check em out

[sorta off topic]I can't imagine how blown away I would be if I had something like those. I felt amazing when I went from stock to my first pair of decent earbuds. How do overear headphones compare to in-ear as far as comfort goes? I wear glasses and have found some to be very uncomfortable. I might want to get a set just to wear around the house.

The two that I am looking at the most are Audio Technica ATH-AD700 and Grado Prestige Series SR125i Headphones

i noticed the audio technica headphones u described & all i can is wow.. im glad u have that much $$ 2 give out for such technology, but then football players spend 2-3x that for the beats by dre headphones & i personally think thats really dumb. never heard of those grado prestige headphones. wheres the best place 2 find those?

lol the reason i was considering the audio technica is because i saw on amazon they were $250, but were on sale for $87 lol

Grado can be found from only online retailers i think. I have never seen them at best buy or a local retailer at least.

all of these are padded and have soft leather around them which i find more comfortable than ear buds but with the glasses they could pinch your ear a but against your glasses frame
