This is what im getting for me and my wife for the new year we both need new computers (her more then me) and this is what i'v thought up for us, my wife is getting a 8600GT for her computer (she dosn't game on PC) that a friend gave us after he upgraded his GFX card (if you were curious). What do you guys think? My wife still needs to pick out a new case for her parts but this is what i got so far. Selling my old rig to a friend for 450$ minus my 750watt PSU and my hard drive. thats why i only have 1 psu.

Thoughts, comments......DISCUSS!

not terrible or bad..........the GPU isn't worth it tho

GTX 260 used to go for like $140 before the ATI 5 series came out, now the prices are jacked up

I recommend getting an ATI 5770 if ur on a budget or a 5850 if you want a lot better performance and you have the money

ya wow that is expensive for a 260, my god
can definitely do better at that price

I checked several websites and they all say that the 5770 is comparable to the GTX 260. They can be bought as cheap as $163 to $190 whereas the 260 is $185 to $225. Also be aware that some manufacturers may tweak their cards better than others, hence the higher price tag.

Also just want to point out that the Samsung HDD has only 3 years warranty whereas the WD has 5 years for $10 more. Just something to think about.

i would get this processor for you:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103680&cm_re=550-_-19-103-680-_-Product

it is worth the extra $10 (trust me)

if your wife doesnt game, and thus doesn't need a power-hungry vid card i would get a much cheaper PSU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817152035&cm_re=raidmax-_-17-152-035-_-Product
I have this PSU it is nice because it is modular and is relatively inexpensive

and definetly get a 5770 instead of pricey 260

Go for a HD 5850 and a AMD Phenom II 965 black edition, it'll work like a charm.

If you want the gtx260 get it. I used to have one and easily get over 100 fps while at the 1680x1050 however i would wait for the 300 series to come out and either grab a 285gtx or one of the new 300 series really up too you. But ati i dont have a problem with i just get better results with Nvidia

if your spending 100 bucks on a processor go for the athlon II x4 (quad core):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...706&cm_re=athlon_ii_x4-_-19-103-706-_-Product

Either wait a month or 2 for new nvidia's or go for either of these video cards:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...4017 106792627 1067947106&name=Radeon HD 4890
(any 4890 is a good choice, and should be slightly more powerful than the above mentioned 5770)
or
go with a 5770 of your choice and save a few bucks:

Im getting her the power house PSU (44amps on the 12v rail but only 1 12v rail) just incase she ever wanted to get into gaming (PC) then we could get her any vid card without worrying about power. But good suggestions none the less. I think im going to go with the AMD black CPU just because it has almost 6x the reviews and 95% of them are happy ones meaning its got to be good.

I like nvidia but im not married to it. My first ATI card back in the day died on me within 3 months maybe just a fluke but my geforce FX 5500 is still running stong to this day albeit not good for any modern day game but its still running even though the cooling fan died years ago. Any idea how long until the 300 series comes out and the price range?

+1 more good review (from me)

also the raidmax psu will do pretty much any video card sans 5970 and 295

Hmmm...well it says the GTX 260 needs and i quote "Minimum of a 500 Watt power supply.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 36 Amp Amps.)"

So i'd assume a 295 would be just as high don't know bout the 5970 though...

Although i don't think my wife would ever want anything more then a GTX 260 i think i'll just stay on the safe side, never know when she might see the light as it may be...

The gtx295 is a dual gpu card so it basically has 2 gtx285s in one card so it takes 2x the power of a single card same with the 5970.
If you want to get the thermaltake psu that is fine I'm just saying that from experience the raidmax looks like a better value.

Yeah i see what your saying but the 12v amps makes me stray away from it if i could find a quality PSU with the amp's of the one i listed for the price you listed i'd buy it in a heart beat, but i'd have to be name brand like raid max or thermaltake =)

Don't wait for the 300 series unless you have time..........recent info has stated that the cards won't be coming out till ATLEAST March but they are expecting it to come out even later......Nvidia is having problems with their chips and are delaying it, it was supposed to be released like last year before christmas but then delayed to around january and now delayed again till atleast March

They will no doubt perform better than the current ATI 5850/5870 but i have a feeling they are gonna cost a WHOLE LOT OF MONEY as usual, Nvidia are almost always more expensive as ATI goes the Budget/performance route and of course their high end card dual-chip cards are all about high performance.

Once again tho, don't get the GTX 260, way overpriced and not worth it...in general, all the Nvidia cards are overpriced right now as the price has been jacked up. I don't understand why ppl still recommend it or buy them. I think you should get a 5770 and then in the future if you want, you can CFX it and get performance equal to a 5870 or around that for $330 or even cheaper as the cards get cheaper. Plus you will have DX11 and the 5770 OC's very well and should get you performance almost equal to a 4890 once you OC. 2x5770 OC are great budget/performance cards

No, it doesnt have 2 285's.
It has roughly the equivalent performance of a card between the performance threshold 2 gtx 260's to 2 gtx 275's.
The asus gtx 295 mars had 2 285's with its shell. Needless to say it was extremely powerful but overheated easily.

A GTX 295 is 2xGTX 280's if im not mistaken?

Its definitely not 2xGTX285's because 2xGTX285's perform much better than a single GTX 295 from what i've seen most of the time.

GTX 275 x2 = GTX 295.

FYI.

Oh...and a GTX 275 is better than the old GTX 280s

Thats what i thought but seeing as 295's where released before 275's wasnt totally sure on that one

I thought the same when the 275s came out.

But,

Memory - 1792/2 = 896
Shaders - 480/2 - 240
Texture units - 160/2 = 80
Rasters - 56/2 = 28

(left 295, right 275)

Also, the same memory bus. Only thing different are the clock speeds.
