I applied for the closed beta a long time ago and was going to try it out when open beta came out but you have to pay to get into an "open" beta?

I could'nt get a beta key but I guess later when I get the money I will pre-order it to get access to the open beta.

I don't know if there are pre-order stuff evolved, but I got my beta key free from Massively.

They gave away 10,000 within a few hours.

Is anyone in eGO going to be playing this game? I'm nabbing it on launch, but I'm hoping I'm not alone, the nerd I am and can expect some fellow eGO's to play with.

For those who say that the graphics are lame... the game is not Crysis, no. But it ain't Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, either. Playing the game, I'd say the graphics are superior to WoW, and on the high end of the MMO market. MMOs have to handle a lot of complexity that single player games cant, so the graphics are always a year or two behind. There's some issues to iron out, but it's beta.

Note on my screenshots if you read my review: I left the graphics crank down to "Recommended." I'll be trying "High" tonight.

I've come to love the ship flying mechanic, but have not become to attached to the away teams, mainly due to lag issues. As I work through more missions, we'll see.

yea it was really unstable yesterday, they brought the server down for patching, 20 mins later it was smooth the rest of th night.

Today, there was god awful lag and rubber banding. Then the servers went down. 6 Hrs later....lets hope for not yet another delay...

I got into the open beta and got my key from Fileplanet.

To be honest, I was kinda skeptical about it before actually playing it. I'm a gigantic ST geek, so my opinion of the game is biased because of that, but I was pleasantly surprised from what I've played. It's still running a bit buggy and the lag was god awful today, but it's expected in a beta. First time flying to Star Dock was ftw!

I've talked to a lot of Trekkies about this game, and what I get back is all the same: daww, the graphics look lame, and anyway I've never played a Star Trek game I like and, ewww, it takes place after Nemesis? They then pull a preconception out of their butt and quote it for truth, and smugly confirm for themselves tha the game sucks without taking a moment to even try it.

I blame Cryptic a bit for being... Cryptic. There's a ton of screenshots, all shot at, what looks like Minimum settings. And their site has a bare minimum of background information about the game, which is sad, as they seem to have built a pretty complex backstory about what has happened between Nemesis and "now" in the game. Which leads casual people to give casual effort into looking into the game.

Then, I lambast the trekkie. I make them feel bad. If necessary, I mention how their heresy must be making Gene Roddenberry spin in his grave. And once they get in, I get:

1) Wow, it's buggy but it's beta. I won't be paying for it but they lavished a lot of love on the storyline. I'm surprised, it's pretty good.
2) Wow, now that was fun! I'm so gonna buy this! X, Y, and Z are great!

So for all you haters out there... try it. Maybe wait a week for the majority of patches to come out, then give it a try... it costs you nothing but a bit of bandwidth to try it with a free beta key.

I, too, once did the same thing with Star Trek: Enterprise. After watching the first 3 episodes, I decided that the writers were going out of their way to destroy Star Trek and actively campaigned against the show. Years later a friend of mine guilted me into giving later episodes a look-see, and while Enterprise is still my least favorite Star Trek TV Series, I have more respect for it. It happens every day

i'm still trying to obtain an open beta key, as all the sites have given away their current supply, but the STO website is randomly gonna select players to give keys too, so it's still possible. I'll be pre-ordering the game soon though, just started working again and this first paycheck is already gone

Edit: well how do you like that? after posting in the STO fan page on Facebook, someone with an extra key sent me it, and i'm downloading it now! with my connection it should be done by tomorrow

I can't seem to ever log on when there isn't lag. I refuse to play a laggy game. Beta or not, I won't play anything that's laggy. It's keeping me from experiencing the game at all. I just boarded the other ship in the very beginning but I just can't deal with the rubber banding.

I'm not that big of a Star Trek fan, but I'm looking forward to STO. I'm in the Open Beta but I'm not pre-ordering yet.

I hear yah Sissy. When it is stable and running smooth, STO is actually very fun (in Space and in a group). But it has been at many a time, laggy and rubber-band...ery.

When you get into deep space encounters and group missions and there are lots of spawned opponents, you get that feel that there is a hectic battle going on with beams and torpedoes and mines exploding all around you. Very engaging and, imo, satisfying when it is over and done with.


Also there's the carrot on a stick proposition Cryptic is holding up where you pay 240$ for a lifetime sub and you get the ability to create a playable liberated borg character. ::shakes fist at Cryptic::

I totally preordered it already simply because i also am a giant trekky nerd. I cant wait to customize my own ship. I went with the bridge officer for my bonus and i got the deluxe collecters edition. I waited to long to recieve the beta key though. I hope it doesnt stay laggy like people are saying because thats not kewl. My friends are all waiting for the new Star Wars game to come then they are dropping WoW. I am just interested to try soemthing different. I played a game called Solar Empire . It has Space Oriented fights and such and i dig it. KKHHAAANNN!

I got my beta key from tentonhammer (sp?) and I got to try it out last night.

It nearly made me late for work (lol), but it's not without typical beta issues. I suspect they will be ironed out soon enough. I have no idea what I'm doing in the game but I am impressed by it so far. It feels very Trekkish and I am enjoying being immersed into that setting, especially being a huge TNG nerd.

I haven't pre-ordered yet, I understood that you could play on the Klingon side, are they just leaving that out of the beta? I've wanted to Captain a Vor'cha attack cruiser for so long it's not even funny.

Overall though good stuff!

Not at all Spitfire. You are able to create a Klingon once your Fed hits Lieutenant 6; though some have stated that it's possible to unlock it at 5.

The big thing w/ Klingon is that there is no content out for it so do not expect anything beyond what you see in Deep Space Encounters on the Fed side and PvP.

Unfortunately I think Vor'cha class is tier 3 and the level cap atm is 16 or Lt. Cmdr 6, so only Tier 1 beyond your starter ship is the best you can currently achieve.

Just make sure to hit lvl cap and be ready because they'll more than likely raise it soon enough.

I'll probably end up pre-ordering just to get the head start and perhaps the borg officer....but man I wish I could get the playable liberated borg char. w/o having to pay that 240$ lifetime sub.....

I just finally hit Lt. Commander 1 last night, and I got my tier one ship! Escorts are mean little suckers. Here's some screenies I took:
