Well hello fellow tech talkers,

I Have an AMD Phenom II X2 550 BE and i really want to hit 4GHz.

As you can see in the screenshot below, i already have it OCed to 3.7GHz on multiplier alone. As you can also see my temps are relatively low (23c). When i raise the multiplier to 19 (3.8ghz) or higher my system becomes unstable.

Since I'm a total noob at overclocking I haven't touched the voltage what so ever.

Might it be possible to reach 4ghz if i tweak the voltage some, and if so how and how much?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Specs:
Phenom 550
Gigabyte GA-ma709x-UD4p
Coolermaster Hyper 212+

Up the voltages to 1.38 and see what you can do..........check AMD or google to see what the safe voltages are for your CPU.

Just change Vcore for now, the rest will be confusing if you don't read about it. So just do 1.38v on the Vcore and maybe try like 3.75-3.8ghz, if its stable increase it more to like 3.85ghz. If it becomes unstable, increase the volts a bit more to like 1.42v.

Be sure to check your Temps while doing all this, load temps also. Run Prime95 for a bit just to see what your temps are and see if its stable, if it lasts like 20 mins, keep overclocking.

Slightly off topic, but seeing this thread made me wanna overclock my old 800mhz AMD :p

Post a bios template of all relevant voltages, clocks, multipliers, etc.

I've never owned an AMD chip, but I'll see what I can figure out.

Is this what you meant?

3.8 is lasting longer than it did w/o voltage increase

@freaking: what?

I have Boy scouts, so while im gone ill run prime 95, and see how it goes.

Ex. of bios template

Frequency Control
CPU Clock Ratio ( 20X )
CPU Host Frequency (Mhz) ( 201 )
MCH Strap ( Auto )
CPU Uncore Frequency (Mhz) (Auto )
CPU Clock Skew ( 0 ps )
Spread Spectrum ( Disabled )
PCIE Frequency (Mhz) ( 101 TO 105)
OC Recovery ( Disabled )
Memory Feature
Memory Speed ( Standard )
Memory Control Setting ( Enabled )
Memory Frequency ( 2:8 )
Command Rate ( Auto )
Voltage Control
EVGA VDroop Control ( W/O Vdroop )
CPU VCore ( 1.365v )
CPU VTT Voltage ( +250mv )
CPU PLL VCore ( 1.90 )
IOH PLL VCore ( Auto )
QPI PLL Vcore ( 1.275v)
DIMM Voltage ( 1.65v )

IOH VCore ( Auto )
IOH/ICH I/O Voltage ( Auto )
ICH Vcore ( Auto )
VTT PWM Frequency ( 250 KHz )
CPU PWM Frequency ( 800KHz )

Of course when I made the suggestion i did not notice that you said you had not increased voltage, I thought you were trying to get the last few Mhz out of your CPU.

I've never used prime95 before does this look correct?
CPU usage is 100%

yes thats basically what it is.........also do wat FreakingHell is telling you too, post up your bios settings basically.

bad news as i was heading out the door my pc crashed. So, more voltage? Also is there a way to show bios settings w/o copying them down on paper and then typing them up?

Yes increase voltages.......and im not sure about the bios thing, memorize it lol??

btw the max voltage for our cpu is 1.425 so do not cross it unless you want to risk the life of your cpu.
also you won't be able to hit 4ghz i can almost guarantee. i tried it too but it won't be stable. every guide and review of overclocking this cpu had a max of about 3.8-3.9 ghz at its max voltage including overclockers club, who are great at these things. this cpu just won't make it that far unless you get really lucky and somehow get one that can (since all cpus are different) but i highly doubt it.
also you may be able to unlock the other 2 cores on your cpu, but it will make it run a lot hotter than as a dual so your OC won't be able to be as high, but its up to you if you want to try it or not.
its been reported that the gigabyte 790fxt-ud5p can successfully unlock so yours might be able to also.
