Wait a second.... Apple TV is pretty darm cool.
If you want digital content on your TV/surround sound set up, and don't know how to make it work, how to find correct codecs/convert files, amd don't want wires then it's a good way to go.
Download your movie from iTunes and then watch it without trouble on your bigger screen and better sound system.
Secondly, I have to disagree with throwing a modified version of OSX on to a touch device. What would be the point? Traditional operating systems are designed with keyboard/mouse as the input. Trying to just alter it a bit and throw touch on it is hugely annoying and just doesn't work well.
HP has done it, with their all in one Touchsmart desktop lines. People end up just reverting back to keyboard and mouse.
No, I really believe it needs to be designed from the ground up with touch in mind as the primary input method. Bigger buttons, because no finger has the pixel precision of a mouse. Different control schemes, because you have to incorporate gestures instead of clicking/right clicking, drab-box selecting.
They had a touch OS already, and it had tons of apps already designed to be used for touch. Why try to modify an existing keyboard/mouse OS? What benefit is there to having OSX on there? Your existing software library is designed to be used with keyboard and mouse as well, so even if the OS was redesigned for touch the programs themselves would all have to be reworked or some crazy workaround would have to be set up to make them even marginally efficient to use.
The iPhone OS was the only way to go. Not simply because they already had it on hand, but because it's just the way that a touch-based OS should be set up. When you throw in the existing touch apps it's simply a no-brainer.
That is of course, assuming that it was a good idea to bring a tablet like this to market. Time will tell.
Ok, but I was really hoping for it to be a portable device that I can run any software I wanted on it, and use it as any other tablet computer is used. Like to take notes, I can't do that with the Ipad's software, but OSX has built in support for touchscreens and external tablets, a onscreen keyboard and hand writing recognition.

to be honest, just get a netbook. can do everything except the touch screen part and is a couple hundred bucks cheaper.
I was excited for the ipad until I saw that it did basically what an Ipod touch does just with a larger screen.

Whether Apple TV is good or not was not why I said that, I said it because of all the apple products including the shuffle, all computers, time machine, etc the apple tv has sold the worst. I mean to be honest all the Ipad is, is a big I touch, there is nothing the Ipad can do that an Iphone cannot.

lame. a bigger version of an iphone that you have to pay to use 3G service. Furthermore, it doesn't allow you to multitask and because you're on the same OS as the iphone, I believe you can't use simple programs such as Microsoft Office. Lame. get a laptop.
Exactly my question....also my high school used Promethean boards the direct competitor to smart boards, they came with something called "slates" and they could be used to give notes from anywhere in the room and allow for students to use them as well.
