Some wierd stuff about the soldier VS demo war.

The one thing this doesn't account for is simultaneous kills. Obviously the numbers are way off but how many times have you killed more than 1 person at a time with those classes.

With soldiers, you do need 2 rockets to kill a demo at least, unless they're crit rockets. And with demos you need 2 direct nades at least to kill a soldier or 3 stickies. 1 and 2 if they're crits. Sooo... it would've had to be a 100% crit server and the guy sitting next to a ammo locker to nullify reload times.

But yeah. We all knew there would be cheaters out there. That was a given. Those two top ones in both teams were the worst of it. The second seats were actually a bit more believeable, but still really huge. Still most likely a lot of people did cheat by making pacts with friends to kill each other for quicker easy kills.

Doesn't change in the slightest the fact that no human being can remain at a computer literally 24/7 killing demomen/soldiers every--what?--2.5 seconds without eating food, drinking, maintaining hygiene, and sleeping. The time spent roaming, respawning, reloading, not getting kills, etc. FAR outweighs the "simultaneous" kills.

Lol i mean does it even matter...its impossible to NOT have cheaters in such an event...Valve expected cheaters so this is obviously just another thing to distract us from the crappy Gunboats lol...well done Valve...so sneaky..

Does this actually surprise anyone...?

There were several achievement servers with demo/sold specific maps running to allow this kind of thing... i viewed info for one of them and one guy that was connected for like 2 hours, maybe less, had like 35,000 points... i stopped caring after the first night of that week.

same general principle behind my lack of interest in stats, cuz people are cheap... not to mention taking a team game seriously and playing for personal rank rather than fun defeats the purpose of it all, but i digress... :P

For the demomen to come from behind and actually finish on top in the numbers only to have their win snatched away because of the propaganda contest winner, that was the biggest middle finger to the community with the whole war, more-so than the people cheating the numbers.

but, what do you expect from valve... they're notorious for seemingly trying to ruin a good thing with their games... ;)

Errr...no.

They were still behind even before the contest. They were catching up, but in no way were they on top. Besides, they mentioned that they would award points via to contest, so if anything, the demo team didn't try hard enough to win. Not Valve's fault we were on top the whole way through. =)

Not too surprised that some would resort to cheating, but those are some insane numbers. Just how many people are there that would waste 24 hours to try and get points? Some life.

Errr...no.

Umm... yes.

The Demo's would have won by 1914 kills before the contest points were awarded, something Robin Walker touched on in an official article regarding the whole thing recently. The contest decided it, which is pretty impressive considering the Soldier was leading to start off and has a huge advantage in close combat over the Demoman.

Final Score:
  • Soldier- 6,406,065
  • Demoman- 6,372,979

Contest Points:
  • 60,000 to soldier
  • 25,000 to demoman

Actual Kills:
  • Soldier- 6,346,065
  • Demoman- 6,347,979

I don't really see why any of this matters, especially in the long run. Valve knows (just as any other company knows) that people will find ways to get what they want. If that means playing an achievement server (or even a farm) then that's what will happen. You can't govern all of the people, all of the time.

Regardless, I feel like the other posters that this means the Demoman secret weapon will most likely be released.

obvious troll is a troll... Valve is just looking for a way to release the demo's secret item. possibly others...

that would be awesome...i honestly dont like the demo anymore...a secret weapon...sure why not xD

They said before way early in the beginning that the contest would play a factor. It's not like these came out of nowhere. You're acting as if they threw it from out of nowhere.

But regardless, it's just a game. The item awarded to us is useful, but average, and the contest is over. It doesn't matter who won as long as we both enjoyed it.

You guys do know, they were both competing for the same weapon? So if the demo does get anything, it will be the gunboats...

If you wish to interpret it that way Sgt, so be it. I was merely pointing out that you were wrong about the Demo's being behind in the points prior to the contest winner. I never said it came out of nowhere last minute, just that it ultimately did become the deciding factor as Valve said it could have been.

Anyway, moving on...

I'm fine with the soldier getting the boots, would have been dumb to give them to the demo as a slot weapon... sticky but no pipe? doubt many people would have liked that, and it wouldn't make sense to wear boots with a pipe launcher since you cant jump with those. :P

I don't think they were going for the same weapon, because one of the Valve employees said that the "Demoman's secret weapon is much cooler in my opinion"

If you check the "cheat" kills on the blog, the demos cheated a hell lot more than the soldiers and the soldier cheat kills drop off in much bigger chunks. So in reality, the demos were behind, despite how skeptical we can get over the contest.

At any rate, this is how I see it:

There really wasn't much Valve could do to stop the cheating, which doesn't matter any more. IMO, it was very obvious that Valve would eventually release an unlock for the demoman. It seems like demos would get the gunboats for two reasons: 1.) Why would Valve make two weapon ideas and only give away one? 2.) Demos could drop grenade launcher for gunboats.

But since the gunboats are hardly worth a backup shotgun, it's very unlikely that they'd have demos give up an invaluable weapon so you can sticky jump more. It seems pretty likely that Valve had a second weapon planned for demoman all along, and if anything, has playtested it further over the past month and a half. And based on the nature of how the competition went down and for the sake of game play, it'd be stupid not to release another demo weapon.
