Hey all. I currently have a SATA 300 gb hard drive installed. I have a spare IDE 80 GB hard drive. I was thinking to use this to set up the OS (windows 7) onto it and leave the 300 SATA gb one for storage. Will this effect any performance in a increase or a decrease. What do you guys recommend I do to get full performance. Should I just leave the 80gb IDE hard drive for backup and stuff like that?

Adding a second hard drive wont decrease or impact performance one bit, go for it!

Personally, i would use the 300GB for the OS and such, then use the 80GB to backup important stuff.

Or you could use the 80GB as like, a gaming hard drive. All your gaming stuff can go on it nicely

Hm. but I heard that there should be a difference with SATA and IDE hard drives speed wise. Come to think of it, I might do what u said nd install the games to the 80 GB.

I've run 2 hd's before. If there was a performance difference, i didnt notice. Since ones SATA and ones IDE, it probably would affect it less since its on 2 different things. You know what i mean?

Your 80GB IDE HDD is ATA100 @ 100MB/s, unless you have an ATA133. Your SATA HDD is 1.5GB/s unless it's a SATAII which is 3GB/s. You will get better performance from the SATA HDD. I would only use the 80GB for storage.

Do u think installing programs or games on the 80 would affect performance?

So this answers one of my question on where to install the os; SATA.

I think its the 1st SATA seeing as my pc came from late 08.

If the 80 runs at 1.5GB per second, i think your fine with a slight decrease over the 300 one. So loading up games will still be fine.

His 80GB doesn't run @ 1.5GB/s, it is 100MB/s. Unless your running WindowsXP, just use the SATA HDD for OS, and the 80GB for storage. If you use WindowsXP, you can set your PageFile on the 80GB.

Alright. thanks. At least I wont need to worry bout backing up files with a external device now.

Use the 80gb for movies, pictures and stuff.........its hell of a lot slower compared to SATA II but it won't matter for movies and pictures and music and all that junk.

You should just buy another hard drive the same as your 300gb one and do RAID 0
