Just to give ya a lil heads up, im actually asking about the largest capacity hard drive. I know that there are 2+tb hard drives just now coming out, but im sure that in the higher end industry, theyre massive hard drive. Does anyone have a single clue as to what the largest current capacity hard drive is? I wonder if its gone passed the 5tb range. Any ideas guys?

Btw, I wasnt quite sure whether I should put this here or in off-topic, esp since were talkin bout tech based information. Please move the thread if it needs to be moved.

I'm sure they have larger than 2TB droves in development.

However, I'm not sure how high windows can go.

The ext4 file system for unix based systems can handle up to 16TB. Obviously ntfs wouldn't be able to go that high.

The problem with larger hard drives is our exsisting operating systems running on filesystems that aren't compatible

The highest capacity consumer drives available at this time are 2TB.

But 2.5TB and 3TB drives are expected to be launched in November of this year.

ya i was thinking of getting some 2tb drives but it is way too much data to trust to one drive so i have a mix of 500gb's and 1tb's in all of my setups.

Same here, I thought about getting a 1TB but it would be a huge loss if it got corrupted.

So I use 1 500GB and 2 250's.

same my main desktop runs 2 500gb's and my server runs 4 500gb's that way i dont lose as much with a failed drive

and as much as we think our data is important I'm sure Enterprises are 10x more so.

Rather then like huge drives, they use huge arrays... on the [H] forum, a guy posted a cluster he was building for a government thing that had like ... I wanna say 5 petabytes of storage... that was over several 1,000 HDDs

I have a 2TB external for my laptop. It's convenient for me to just put all my junk, movies, music, school work whatever on that, and keep my games and such on my primary. I like having an eSATA port as well =). For the more important things I'm afraid of losing, I back them up a second time on my Archos 5 that holds 250GB. Very convenient little thing. Beats the touch IMO, and it was only $250 a year ago =)

I had thought about getting an internal SSD for my laptop as there's 2 bays, and using the other for some more storage, but not really a friendly option for a tight budget college student.

right now my WHS just has 3 TB HDDs in it... with WHS duplication features my chances of losing data are lower then they normally would be.

I do however have 17 Hot swap bays left on my case so I have plenty of room to expand
