So i'm gonna be putting together a new rig. I'm pretty sure i'm going AMD on this one again, if i decide to go Intel it will probably be an i5. Anyway it will most likely be an AMD Phenom II x4 3.0. I'm gonna be going with a Gigabyte board, the micro i think it's ud2h not positive. Going DDR3 1600 4 gigs most likely depending if the wifey will let me go a bit more spendy on this one if so definitely going 8 gigs. PSU brand and wattage will be determined at the store. Oh yeah i'm not going to build this using Newegg or any other site i believe in supporting local stores. Case is from NZXT can't remember the model but it will suit this build nicely. For cooling i'm not sure if i'm going to do air or water. would like to do water but not sure if i can budget it in. anyway that's going to be my build with my rudimentary info.

Water is more of a hobby and enthusiast thing. It certainly is more fun and will make your RIG that much sicker. The temps will be drastically better if you have a good setup. Otherwise, get a really good air cooler and you can rival some water setups. The only water setups worth going for are ones with triple 120mm radiators and such. Dual radiator is the limit for CPU only almost.

Since your only going with a Phenom II x4, i say get a good air cooler. I have the Noctua NH-D14 and its the best air cooler on the market. The thing is massive and will limit what you are able to get though. No RAMS with large heatsinks on them sadly. They have a whole compatibility list on their website though.

i5 will definitely be faster when overclocked and such. But if this is strictly for gaming, the Phenom II x4 will be fine. Just overclock it over 4.0ghz.

So i went and got my parts yesterday

Case: NZXT Lexa S
Mobo: MSI NF750-G55
CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 945 (going to replace the aluminum heatsink with an aftermarket cooler)
Ram: Patriot 2x2gigs 1600 mhz
Video: XFX HD4850 1gig (this will be overclocked will update with it's clocks later this isn't a new card i'm using it from my old comp since it can run all the games i play)
HDD: Samsung SATA 500gig 16meg buffer (thinking about getting a second one and raiding them)
DVD drive: SATA dvd drive (might get a bluray not sure how well they work heard not well)

As of this posting i have the cabling mosty done up and looking nice that took me 2 1/2 hours cuz the case is being difficult. will put up pictures of me building it after i'm done. been taking them as i build tho

How much did you spend?
And why didn't you get a 5xxx series card?

Spending extra time to get pretty wiring is always worth it :D

I can't leave my cords everywhere, I do it so they are pretty much invisible.

Have your CPU, and boy do I love it!
Runs really hot though. I bought a $40 heat sync because this thing was going to fry my computer if I didn't.

yeah in two weeks or so i'm going back to frys and picking up a few more things that i didn't this time cuz of funds but one is definitely a different heatsink.

edit: i spent 750 and got a warranty that allows me to overclock and still be able to return stuff (total win!!!)

yeah they have good prices (comparable to newegg) and you get to marvel at all the random awesome stuff they have

The rig is finished WOOT

Nice. Ive heard frys return policies are terrible. The store itself is amazing, and they are all different, just hope whatever you buy there works well.

My fry's has good prices on CPUs and Mobo's, but thats it. Everything else is terribly overpriced.

I agree that it is fun to look around though.

They have pretty good deals on ram, a while back i saw a set of 6gb corsair dominators which was ~$190, and they retail $238 on newegg i think.
They have good deals, but I agree much of their stuff is too expensive. 2 cold cathode lights cost me 7 bucks there lol.

well i haven't been able get my pics up yet cuz they are on two different cameras. but i do have an average fps for tf2. 2fort ir about 25 peeps in heavy combat max graphix @ 1680x1050 res i was pulling 120-150 fps.

I overclocked my video card and it's running at 690MHz GPU and memory is running 1188MHz

Well update on what i've done so far.

I installed a Zalman 9900led
I installed a TT cyclo cooler for my ram
oced cpu to 3.34
technically from mobo stand point i oced my ram up to 1600 which is where it's supposed to be at.
next i plan on pulling my ram up higher and tightening my timings but as of now i'm happy.
