New Eden!

Special Report by Edgegamers Action Reporter Zelda McCoy.

A simple trip out to the Eve Gate turned into quite an event... because this is Eve Online, and anything is possible.

The Eve Gate, in case you've been in cold storage for the last five thousand years, just so happens to be the collapsed wormhole that stranded all us Capsuleers in New Eden. It can still be seen, deep in the lawless stretches of our new home, and Edgegamers Corporation decided to go take a peek.

The trip was pretty uneventful, until Johnny Rah, a noob with a way too expensive ship (a Navy Megathron full of expensive loot) started talkin' smack in local. Our scout got caught in his guns, but was able to easily evade. Johnny thought he was the bees knees... until the other 14 frigates and cruisers in the fleet warped in on him. He dashed off and hid, constantly challenging GardengroveVW to a "one on one battle." We finally warped away to leave Garden alone... only for the noob to claim "wife aggro" and warp off to a safe. Details can be found in Gardengrovevw's profile ingame.

We went and saw the sights. The Eve Gate is quite pretty, and impressive looking. Here's a shot of a Rifter orbiting the Eve Gate Star, looking at the collapsed wormhole:

We also got a look at the Black Monolith in the Dead End system:

RIP David Bowman

We decided to make our way home... and were ambushed by professional pirates. They bottled us up in station, and demanded a ransom of 2 million per member. They had many Battlecruisers and heavy ships, all waiting for us to undock. GardengroveVW called in some outside assets (who shall remain anonymous) to help scope out the enemy. Our very own FallenDream09 ducked in and out of the two exit systems, scanning out the bad guys and tracking their movements. In the process, he dodged a Harbinger, a Hurricane, deftly avoided 3 very aggressive anti-covert ops probe ships, barely escaped a Dominix deploying smartbombs, and even evaded a Taranis fit with Railguns, all in an effort to keep us updated on the enemy whereabouts. When a hole appeared in their offensive line, our entire fleet of 15 ships undocked and warped to high security space, with seconds to spare. Our in-system spy reported that they blundered about a bit, trying to find the "noobs" who outsmarted them at their own game.

It's safe to say, we wouldn't have made it back without the efforts of FallenDream and Garden's ingame contacts. Excellent work, people!

All in all a successful, exciting run. We got to see the sights, got to give a true noob a run for his money, got some choice quotes for our profile pages, and even outfoxed a gang of players with a criminal record as long as the Monolith is high (and even got 350~ items worth of market data uploaded to Eve Metrics along the way!).

Don't miss out on the next run! PM any Edgegamers Corporation member (Look for the EVE Forum tag) with your email address, and we'll send you a buddy invite worth 21 days, and you can be in a low sec roam in less than 24 hours! (Really!)

EDGEGAMERS NEEDS YOU!

EdgeGamers Corporation is looking for a few good pilots who wish to make a difference in the Devoid region of New Eden. We have a large mining and logistics group busy building the ammunition, ships, and structures necessary for the functioning of the Devoid economy, while our mission runners and Defense Force keep the systems around Devoid safe from piracy and griefers. hahaha I'm laughing because I just got the punchline title.

Anyways, as usual these threads amaze me. I played eve for over a year and it just didn't stick for me but I love the concept and the execution is really spectacular. Keep up the good work guys.

I'm glad you like; it struck me as I gazed into the fridge to root out a can of Coke Zero before I sat down to post :D

The big difference I like to make when I'm writing up these threads is to point out the fun aspects of playing with a group of kick-butt Edgegamers. It really makes a difference. Eve is more dependent on the "MMO" part of "MMORPG," space is big, damn big, and you need some good friends to make it fun.

Fleet roams, mining ops, shootin' the breeze in corp chat, discussing market details on the forums; Eve is just the vehicle that allows us to get together and have fun. Even if you've played Eve before, even if you've thought, man, this game isn't for me... I highly suggest ducking back in. If you don't want to slap any coin on the table, IM me and I'll send you a trial. Knock up a new character, jump in, say Hi, and see if it might click with some cool froods around. Eve, today, is a lot more awesome looking and playing than it was even a year ago. And with a new expansion coming soon... yeah, it's going to kick hiney all over town.

The software is free ... and if you can manage to earn enough ISK, you can buy PLEX cards ingame and play without (you personally) paying a dime. :)

Too bad my ability to earn ISK isn't up to my playing EVE that way. I keep seeing these posts and it makes me want to reactivate my account ... again.

Ill be getting back onto this game when i have some money for it :p

legit, that got my adrenaline going. why can't i ever be there for these things? WHY DIDN'T ANYBODY CALL ME?

Wow! seems terrific! I always wanted to play EVE someday but i don't have much money at this time. But now that i know there is a fleet of eGO members, i'll try to do what it takes to join in the fleet.

Well the big deal with this game to me is how your going to keep yourself funded with isk. Scraping that 1st couple million isk to get your skills/frigate/destroyer/cruiser ships in line for some good isk mission running can be a struggle but thats what eve online is a struggle to keep it together in space.
I played WoW 1-75 and the constant grinding wore me out...
(seeing animations thousands of times over didnt dull it one bit) This game has a realized depth with player owned space sectors. If you ever played Homeworld, cockpit space fighters, or even NAVAL warship games youll find EVE very enjoyable.

I played WoW for 5 years, 3 level 80's a 79 and 76 plus gm'ing a 300+ guild on Undermine just burned me out with the constant grinding.

Is EVE similar in design or can I take it easy and play when I want with no scheduling or must have deadlines?

After my first week of EVE Online, I stopped doing missions* and started focusing on manufacturing and market-PvP (buying and selling items on the market). I went the next two years that way, only occasionally doing missions ... and those weren't my mission, I was helping someone else (usually by hauling away the loot in my transport ship :)).

I know other people that spend their entire time running around stealing ore from jet-cans (ejected cargo containers that anyone can put in/take from) or ransoming/destroying people in low-sec.

I know others that spend 100% of their time out in null-sec (Player controlled) guarding their corporations territory against pirates and competing corporations/alliances.

When most other games say "its a sandbox" they mean "you go where-ever you want". When EVE Online says "its a sandbox" they mean "you can go where you want, and do what you want".

Damnit ... between this thread and a couple of coworkers, I'm starting to feel the need to reactivate my (now 5yo) character and get back to making money on the market and hauling stuff in my transport/freighter. :O :glare: :)

* Missions in EVE are like quests in other MMOs.
