i this is probably a post i should have made before buying the card but i was sick of looking at store after store and seeing no results. so i just bought a XFX GTX 285 for ebay. its used, 5 months old and probably wont work when i get it but it seemed like a good deal at the time.

the point of this post is to see if im and idiot or not.

is it a good card? was $270 AU to much? i dont know......? i should be happy that ive finally got a new card but ive got this creeping feeling that something is going to go horribly wrong and im going to find myself neck deep in the proverbial creek

*note. im going way over my budget of $300 and getting a thermaltake litepower PSU as well. not sure if i want the 600W or the 700W. theres only $10 difference between the two

It's not really that good anymore.
An HD 5850 would of been a better choice.

Hope you like the card, i think that is kinda pricey though. Why no 5850?

about PSUs

Thermaltake litepower=bad

ThermalTake Toughpower=good

corsair=mostly good

Seasonic=Best :drool:

the 5850 was my 1st choice but its to much atm. i had $300 to get a card and PSU. i was looking at a 5770 but saw this and when for it. it was a fed up stuff it this will do decision. i just need it to last till the end of the year, then i can make a good i7 system (if the prices have dropped by then) and give this one to the girlfriend. i guess anything is better then my 9500 gt with a fanless heatsink for cooling.

how about this for a PSU?

im trying to go as cheap as i can without getting a generic piece of crap like the one i have now.

heres the card i was looking at before i bought this one

the GTX has free postage and a 60 day money back option so if it is rubbish i can send it back i guess. should i get the 5770?

the person you bought from did they post in there information that they take returns? if the do except returns on a bust product then you should be good, but if they dont and they stated that it works id open a case with ebay

How are Corsairs mostly good? They seem pretty good, and most made by Seasonic

Thats one thing im a bit confused about, is the 400 series being released to the public tomorrow or to places like tom's for reviews.

Yeah, I'm not sure the card is actually being released in stores tomorrow.
But I think full details and some reviewers will get it tomorrow .. or at least allowed to talk real specs tomorrow.

i wouldn't, why would they sell a card for $140 less than retail. Seems kinda fishy.

All the links other than the above are broken.

As for PSUs, if you want a complete rant check out this, this, and this.

In short,

Corsair:

HX=very good
TX=better options exist
Every other cosair=pretty good
CORSAIR IS NOT ALWAYS BEST!!!!!!!!

Yes Seasonic makes 650w and lower, but not the upper ones are CWT, even so, seasonic branded PSUs are better than the ones they supply corsair with.
Or in short, SeaSonic makes everything up to 650W except for the VX550W, and CWT makes everything 750W and up, plus the VX550W.

/$0.02

i think im going to send the 285 back and get the 5770 and a psu. i feel bad about it but id rather a newer card and a psu not just a old and now outdated card

It's not that it is terribly outdated, its that it is overpriced. Well, i hope you like the 5770, it is a better card for the price.

Just because a new series came out doesn't mean its an outdated card. My 4870 1 GB is over a year old now and it still runs games flawlessly.

ive changed my mind again. made a new post. i think its better then any other option

Lol, the new Nvidia 400 series comes out tomorrow...

srsly, should have waited, but if ya needed a card that bad thats cool. I got a evga 5900 1gb mem and its still doing me good even though i could use something better,
