HDD Disk Failure

Well, this 5 month old shiba satellite says :
Your HDD has the SMART Predict Failure function which monitors the HDD operating status. Your HDD is experiencing a problem and SMART monitoring software predicts that the HDD will fail. Toshiba strongly recommends you create a back-up for your HDD data. Then contact an authorized service provider in order to check your drive and purchase a new replacement drive if necessary.
:glare:.....:cursing:.....:crying:

I've never heard of Disk Failure before. What are some of the causes? And besides the obvious(get a replacement), how else can i fix this?:confused1:

Thanks for your help!!

Hard disk failure can be caused by

1. You corrupting the disk and causing loss of data
2. Hard drive is used a lot over a long period of time, burning it out. Disks only spin so long before friction kicks in
3. Damage caused by liquid's getting inside or dropping it.

Those would be the 3 most likely options. Grab a USB HD and backup now just in case

Personally, I do not trust SMART, only because it's lied to me so much before.
Again, this has been since 1998, so SMART might've changed its ways.

Just to make sure it's for real, I recommend burning a live-disc of Linux: Ubuntu.
That version of Linux has something similar to SMART that goes off at launch if needed.

There's also 3rd party software for Windows dedicated to HDD Health Status if you google.

But iSimon has the right idea if it is true.

Quick questoion, I have a desktop with enough space to store all my data on it. How do I do that? That would be the easiest if there's a possible way.

Oh and Ric, it is physically dying because everything is freezing and taking longer and longer to load things. It will ask to restart IE and Widgets because they failed to respond.

The easiest way to transfer between laptop and desktop would be either by using

1. USB HD or a flash key if you want to do little amounts at once
2. Burning files to cd/DVD then copying to the desktop
3. Sending files over the network. NOT RECOMMENDED, can be slow if you don't have good Ethernet ports/cards or a good router

USB HD would be the best way, it works for me. You can get 500gb drives for under $100 I believe

That doesn't necessarily indicate a HDD failure.
This could be due to Viruses, Malware, Spyware, etc.

Sometimes when hard drives fail they make a loud clicking or otherwise noise, abnormal noises.
It can also be caused by neglecting Spyware, Malware, Viruses. Overtime they are proven to go over 9000 and annihilate HDD's.

I'd use Windows chkdsk command and look for any reported bad sectors.
The more bad sectors, the worse the hard drive health.

But before that, I'd listen to iSimon and back up ASAP.

Thank you thank you. I've got cool friends who are going to let me borrow theirs. Thanks for all your help.

But I has AVG 9.0 2779! They shouldn't be failing on me... But i totally considered that at first.

SMART tests have come a long way. They now rarely produces false positives. The 3rd party software that you can download used the same method as SMART does, so it's redundant to get those.

Bottom line, if your hard drives SMART tells you your hard drive will fail, backup your data ASAP.

just to finish this post off, Yes it was HDD failure, but nothing a little warranty covered fix could handle. Got it shipped to Geek Squad City and they fixed her all up for $0!! Downloading my games and i'll be back in-game in no time!! now with shiny W7 Ultimate.. Yum. ;P

Wow Geek squad for free ? Thats unusual... Excellent you got it all sorted out before things got worse.
