Random Crashes to Desktop/Lockups

So I've tried everything in the performance area/guide/advice to stop these apparently random crashes I've had since the last patch.

List of things tried:
-adjusting various aspects of the settings.ini
-adjusting various aspects of the game settings in the options menu
-adjusting settings/driver versions (clean installs of course) across the board on the actual system
-altering visuals via model edits and whatnot (PB kicks for this apparently, hehe...)

List of things to try:
-adjusting speaker settings in settings.ini (just read about this one)
-trying brand new drivers released by nvidia literally few days ago (NOW WITH LESS FAN DESTRUCTION!!!)

Anything you guys might know to try or whatever? My system is fully capable of running the game at maximized settings and was doing so until these past few patches.

Description of what happens and noticed occurances that are related:

What happens is the game either does one of two things; a) it locks up and crashes to desktop or b) it freezes my system and locks the display to where i'm flying blind, vent is shut down immediately, all sound is disabled, requires a manual restart to get back to normal.

Related occurances:

-hopping out of tanks/gunner seats when they are "blowing up" (crashed >7 times) or possibly by being spotted while entering/exiting a vehicle?
-driving a tank down a hill... (crashed 3 times around the time i performed this action)
-having more than 55 "awards" after a match, when scrolling past the 55th (i had what seemed like ~60+ i guess) this hasn't happened much since the very latest patch but i've crashed twice due to something involved with this.

Everything else is flat out random it seems, i've been running from spawn and crashed.

My personal conclusion thus far is that it's not in fact my system but something in the game itself, because i've already spent about 300+ altering certain aspects of my system to optimize cooling/performance/etc. So my question to you guys is:

Is there anything at all you can come up with that I can try to stop this seemingly random crashing?

------------------specs
1050w psu
evga mobo
12 gb ram
2x 285 GTX
dedicated physX card
i7 3+ Ghz processor
average system temp is around 48-54 (what the person who helped me build my system recommended it be around, fans adjust CFM to match this range of temperatures)
Nothing at all in the background outside of typical background services and Ventrilo + Fraps (disabling either changed nothing in terms of crashing)
monitor refresh rate = 60 (if it matters?)
1680 x 1050 resolution (native and default for the monitor)
System set to high performance
Screen Saver/Auto-Off features all disabled on everything
(anything else you guys need to know just tell me and i'll get the info when i get home)

Thanks,

Have you tried playing other games to see if they lock your system up? Unless it only locks up in BC2, you may have a hardware failure.

The game crashes to desktop for me fairly often as well (about 4 times since release is often for me). I've been running on DX9 though, so it may be something to do with that.

The game used to crashed frequently for me too, then I started running in dx11 mode and it hasn't since.

Try different games like toasted said, preferably graphic intense like Crysis or Far Cry 2.

I've played League of Legends, WoW, Borderlands, COD4, tons of emulator games, Crysis (at full-blown settings just for this reason alone to see if it would crash it), etc... sadly; none crashed, i just really don't wanna believe it's the game cuz then I have to hop that DICE releases a patch that fixes my issue.

Also, after digging on the EA forums, apparently the crash to desktop/freeze display is a very common problem :/

I actually have NOT tried running in Dx9, didn't even think to; lol, I should attempt that when i get home as well as the speaker deal.

Thanks toasteddude/shadows :)

I'm not surprised that it's a common problem. The game is still in its early stages of bugs and whatnot, just be patient and hopefully we'll get a huge patch soon.

Lot's of people are saying it's a sound issue with defualt settings (hifi) and to set it to war tape and a 2 speaker deal through settings.ini and stuff so i suppose i'll try that when i get home later.

basically it's:

-play 1-2 game normally
-play 15 minutes or so and crash
-restart
-repeat, over and over and over; REALLY sucks when server's full and you crash only to load back up to your spot being gone :(

I have the same exact problem, I thought it was just me. Hopefully there's an easy fix for it.

so i've done some more reading for those of you who are having these problems as well, here's the results:

-"we are working on a fix." (typical bs from customer support)
-Change to DX11/DX9 (dependant upon video card and capabilities of machines)
-unplug audio input device (conflicting hardware issues with the game)
-run dxdiag and set hardware acceleration for sound from "Full" to "Basic" (supposedly bypasses the above while allowing ventrilo/voip still)
-kill VOIP in both the game options AND the settings.ini

That's all i've found that i haven't personally tried yet, will update with results at some point.

no solution works, I'm assuming this means that nothing client-side is going to help the issue outside of a patch directly fixing the problem. I have the latest drivers, I've tested the drivers I had when I first bought the game. My brother can play and has no lock-ups at all and we have identical machines 100% (aside from MAC addresses and whatnot). I've ripped both vid cards out and tried different ones as well as tried my own in my brothers machine; my machine still failed and his worked... which is odd.

The only thing different between our machines is the speakers we use, that is quite literally it outside of the fact that he has photoshop installed and i don't. So, ionno wtf crawled in the patch they put out last, but it's royally F'd me out of playing consistantly.

If anyone sees anything that relates to this issue and has a "fix" for it; please by all means link it here, i would greatly appreciate it.

well first off is any part in your computer overclocked?, second off have you tried running the game wih you GPU's not in SLI mode, although as new as bfbc2 is it should have been programed to use SLI gpu's but some games have weird errors when using two graphics cards.

I personally haven't had this error ever happen to me yet but i do get really weird menu errors and anything that like overlaps the normal playing screen (like when in a tank or vehicle using a camera view) it like spliced with the normal view and like flickers between bits and pieces of the two D=.

But anyway the game is produced by EA so its no surprise the pc versions riddled with errors and bugs right now DICE is more open to their pc gamers but EA probably pushed it before they could thoroughly test it for the PC and only cared if the console versions worked fine

I did a temp fix by removing some certain things my sound card has on it built-in to stop the system lock-ups. Unfortunately, that means very little or absolutely no talking on vent, which kind of kills a good 1/3 of the game for me.

Anyways, now i just have occasional (maybe 4 times a day?) crash to desktop issues; usually at the scoreboard screen and while driving the hummer in Arica Harbor (but not in atamca desert? odd...).

Either way, the only other major change in my settings is pretty much jacking every graphical aspect of the game all the way up and setting DX to 11 and dropping water to medium while using nvidia's control panel to force a 8x AA. Ironically i have less crashes when my system is overriding the game's settings... that's kind of pathetic on EA/DICE's part.

Will update when they finally get around to patching/fixing this if something comes up.

EDIT 1:

Someone on the EA forums has stated that they're no longer crashing after deleting the C/document/bfbc2 folder and said that it may be a corruption of the .ini file(s). I haven't tested this but will later tonight. Anyone else crashing may want to test and post results, would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well running in DxVersion=11 isnt going to help you since your gfx cards are top out at Dx10.

Also if you're trying to override the game with nvidia settings, dont. It wont work and causes game instability. For instance in DirectX9 (DxVersion=9 in the .ini) will run the game in dx9 properly but the game doesnt support any form of Anti-Aliasing while in dx9 not even if you try to force it in nvidia's control panel.

Crashing when a vehicle blows up has been a common crash and happens to myself from time to time (i dont spend alot of time in a tanks and such tho). Try lowering you're effects setting to medium or even low. Also turn off bloom and hsao entirely. I bet you'll experience a lot better system stability since many crashes or hangs are results of the vehicles' UI (like the choopers', tank's and uav's video camera-esque filters) and after effects like Bloom causing the graphics card to error out.

Also I dont know if you've tried but test the game out with your physX card disabled entirely (or even removed from the system). Also try running the game out of SLi mode, I have SLi as well but haven't tested its effect on system instability, although I know that while using the UAV I sometimes get odd bands across the screen. They definitely appear to be SLi related due to their placement and duration, perhaps its an issue with which mode of SLi works best with BC2. Maybe I'll give it a go trying both Alternate Frame Rending modes and see how that effects the game.

I have some cards i borrowed from work to test Dx11, they... "work" so to say.

if i force the settings, i leave dxversion on auto to avoid that problem, it didn't help sadly :(

haven't tried disabling/removing the physX card, will give it a shot.

My crashes happen randomly. I've played all day and had no crashes (literally 16.5 hours with small breaks for food and whatnot over spring break; lol addict :/ ) then had days where the game's literally unplayable. Neither of these really led to a solid standpoint that it was solely vehicles; although the hummer tends to crash me more often than not (1 out of 3 attempts i crash).

Ionno, it's annoying but whatever... I'll have to wait until the next "real" patch for any hope of playing at a stable rate. That or I can play on my brother's computer... which is more or less the exact same as mine in regards to things that would cause a crash. We've swapped cards, mobos, everything and it's still crashing (full blown re-installs of OS and everything btw on both machines). Maybe it's linked to my online profile? Sounds stupid, but there's not really much else i can think of other than it being completely random.

but, like i said, it's whatever; i still enjoy playing on the servers when i can :D

So I was playing, or rather, camping the spawn point on isle to steal the tank and blow the chopper up as usual and my game "crashes."

SO i get pissed and I'm screaming obscenities and cursing EA and then i notice i'm still playing in the background and the game's still running perfectly (i still got full control) and i can open explorer by clicking the respective icon and when i click the game shoots.

So yeah, if any of you were lucky enough to witness this for all the 2-3 minutes it stayed active; that's why i was running around aimlessly shooting and trying to determine what was what between the graphical glitching caused by my background.

This is the only time it's happened so i doubt it's the cause of the other 100+ crashes i've had, but it was pretty hilarious.

BTW, could anyone that IS NOT crashing post their computer specs that is using an EVGA x58 mobo?

This happens to me as well. I'm running an 8800 GT on DX9 and periodically (about 1-2 times per night) so far I've had the game just crash straight to desktop without warning.

I've also tried playing with sound settings and being / not being on vent, doesn't seem to make any difference.

it's supposedly an onboard sound issue triggered randomly within the game upon a certain loadup of a sound file. Whether or not it actually crashes seems to be anywhere between a 33-50% chance.

This is the assumption made by the literally 100's of people having the problem. Either Realtek or EA/DICE screwed up during the last patch or earlier. Nobody can tell for sure who's to blame or how to fix it 100%.

I disabled my PhysX card entirely (i'd imagine disabling it through Nvidia/Catalyst Control Center would work the same way; this stopped any and all crashing and increased performance somewhat for my system. This didn't work for me initially; but now it is, soooo i dunno; figured i'd update for the people who're having trouble as well.

Called it!

Yeah, but when you called it, it didn't work initially so what's up with that? Maybe i disabled it in only one place? I dunno, but I can play somewhat regularly again so i don't care, lol, and i can be on vent too :D
