hey guys, just built my new rig and have some problems. my 5850 is great and all, but im having resolution problems. on hdmi and dvi to vga, when i set it to 1920 x 1080, the icons, taskbar, and gadgets are still huge.

on my old rig nothing like this happened. i had a 8800. i updated the driver, restarted, reinstalled and up dated again, nothing works.

i really hate having it like this. and also i cant install the drivers that came on the cd with the card. it just wont read on my dvd drive.

any help is welcomed!

Who manufactured it? Call their support staff. They may/may NOT know of a flaw in the graphics drivers current build but regardless they'll be able to give you proper avenues on troubleshooting.

Have you tried DLing them from ATI's website?

I would suggest using ATI's 2009 series of drivers for testing puposes. ATI's 9.x series of drivers are more compatible with both newer and older technologies and are considered more stable than the 10.x series. I would suggest downloading from ATI's website and using the older drivers link at the bottom of the download page for your card/OS.

Another thought: The ATI Catalyst Control Center (CCC) has been known to cause problems -AND/OR- solve problems with display selection and resolution reformation. If you have trouble with the CCC, try using the driver only package. Likewise, if you're using the driver-only package, try using the CCC-included package if you still have trouble.

I hope this is helpful to you! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

well, since the cd that came with it didnt work, of course i got the drivers from ati XD

i have the latest drivers which is i think 10.3.

also, another thing, my sound does not work well. totally not related with the vid card (maybe?) but sound is only coming out from like 2 speakers out of my 5 speakers + sub. i have the 3 wires connection, the black, green, and orange.

i have a asus mobo, installed the audio drivers from the disk. the thing is, only the back two works thats connected to the black wire. the green which is my center speaker doesnt even make a sound.

i dont know if its my speakers because they worked fine on my old mobo after some tweaking. but on this one, nothing.

so also some help on that please :D

and ill try the advice on the video card, for now, i really really want to try gaming XD XD XD

edit -

got my icons and stuff fixed......... out of my own stupidity, i will not tell how..... ok i just cant help it cause its just me XD

i just had to adjust the display settings, ROFLCOPTOR.

now to the sound XD XD XD

Sorry, but whomever suggests 9.x over 10.3 is just foolish.
And for your sound, you're using HDMI, yes? What is your display out (that's from the GPU)?
I'd recommend using DVI. Same high quality image as HDMI, just without sound, so you can have it go through a sound card or the onboard sound out puts.
You can add me/pm me (in my sig) if you want more help.

right now im using a converted vga to vag, no dvi :( i thought i had a cable, and im not using hdmi right now. the only reason i went with hdmi is because i had a spare cable lying around. i think im going to get a dvi, unless vga is the same. but, ah well XD

sound is still missing here and there. ill see what i can do about it, thanks alot!

No no no,
VGA < DVI
VGA is analog, whilst DVI is digital. VGA makes all the colors look washed up. DVI >

And try downloading the latest sound drivers for you motherboard.
To do this, go to your motherboard's manufacturer's website, and go to drivers, and you'll find it there.

damn i am going to get a dvi cable, thanks :D

ill update on the sound problem later, ill try to look for some updates now

edit -

just found out, for reasons unknown, i do not have any dvi ports on my monitor..... so i think im going to just use a dvi to hdmi which i already have. so about that same i think.

Make sure after you installed the drivers for your audio you go into ASUS's stereo tweaking program and change it from 2 speakers to 4, 6, 8, or surround sound speakers.

I also have an ASUS MB, and that fixed the problem for me.

yup. i got it work, now the only problem is my speakers.

pretty old speakers, so one of my main out lines are a bit lose, i had to move it around to get sound coming out. but its still working XD

the hdmi works fine for me right now so i think ill just keep that until otherwise.

thanks for all the help guys, was really awesome. now to get my ip guys to fix my dang internet, paying for 15 mbps and not even getting 1 mbps. thats just crappy.

thanks again guys!!! look for my pics in the gaming rig thread :D

I'm slightly confused about your monitor setup, so I'll just list some random facts that I think may help you.

DVI and HDMI are both digital video, HMDI just has audio too.
VGA is analogue.

Converting from DVI to HDMI will not degrade quality of video.

I think you're doing it the best way.. And also, congrats on your new rig!
