My ISP claims i get 10mb/s download speed. But when downloading, i can never seem to get past 1.2mb/s or so. I speedtested, and i got 9.82mb/s.

Why is this?

Just because you can get 10 MB/s doesn't mean the website your downloading from can handle uploading 10 mb/s just to you only.

Sometimes when I download a file i get 100 KB/s max and other times I can get around 230 Kb/s.

They say you get 10 Mbps or 1.25 MBps. MBps = Megabyte , Mbps = Megabite.
1024KB=1MB
There is 8 bits in 1 byte

Hope you understand, if not just tell me and i'll try to explain more

Yup. The larger numbers make the service seem faster and people choosing a service provider will fall for the same trap you just did.

I didn't fall for a trick... This is the best service in my area at a decent price..

Your connection is a 10mb line but thats not what you'll be transferring at.

Your transfer speed is an eighth of that.

So 10 / 8 = 1.25 mb/s transfer speed.

Thanks guy, I got an explanation on irc by a former AT&T worker
