Hey everyone! :D

Alright, so heres my problem. My parents are getting me a new laptop as a going away gift to college. Im thinking of getting a macbook pro 15 inch i7 2.66 ghz nvidia gforce gt 330M since I heard that the new macbook pros are pretty good for gaming. And im thinknig with steam for mac coming out in the next few months why not? Anyway, some of my friends have been telling me though to get the windows instead but im really looking forward to a mac due to bad experiences with windows. anyways, I was wondering if anyone plays games on a macbook pro or a mac? Any help however would be very much appreciated :)

With steam coming to mac, and all the valve games too, i think its definitely worth it.


And you can get MS Office on mac now too.


Definitely would get one :)

Microsoft Office for Mac was introduced for Macintosh in 1989, before Office was released for Windows.

AKA. Office has been around for Mac longer than it has been around for Windows... So yes, it is on Mac 'now' too... ;)

well i think the big deal is that you can get bootcamp for macbook pro now preinstalled....but yea thanks for the advice simon as well :) im still debating though cause im hearing VERY mixed opinions everywhere...haha...anyway though now im leaning a little more towards the macbook though :) but someone with experience with it would be nice :)

Lol. Or you could buy a laptop with windows for half the price(if not more) with better compatibility for games, and without pretty much alpha testing steam for mac.

hrmmm but ive had really bad experiences with windows laptops...and apparently apple rules in the realm of laptops...especially since their laptops have a battery life of 9 hours as opposed to the what? 2 or 3 hours of windows laptops? but idk tahts just what i heard

You are using it for gaming, and i assume for BC2. BC2 doesn't run on macs, it's not a valve game, but you could run like 2-3 programs and get 1/3 the fps for 2x the price if you so wish ^^

Apple has definitely proved itself with superior laptops. My cousin has had her iBook G4 for years, and still runs like new. They are easy to use, and have great built in wifi, and battery.


Now you might think, its a bit more pricey than a windows one. Why? Well because its BUILT WELL. An entire house burned down, and the iMac still worked. They have a lower crash rate, and are simpler to use.

Overall, macs the way to go.

Did you have a windows pc as well that didn't survive the fire? Plus every laptop has built in wifi for the most part, and do you have battery comparison chart?

Also, he isnt buying a laptop for wifi, he is doing it for gaming, which macs fail for.

******NOTE I THINK THAT APPLE MAKES SOME GREAT STUFF, BUT THERE ARE BETTER OPTIONS FOR THE PRICE******

Apple uses the case (aluminium) as a heatsink. i7 heat produced>thermal capacity of aluminium frame. Makes very hot. (google will find some articles about mac heat for you)

My PC crashes when:

Overclock too far
run with fans too low
Prime 95
OCCT
Linx


Other than that, it is 99% stable.

Macs don't crash often b/c you cant do any of that stuff.

It is equally possible for a PC to survive a fire. Matter of luck.

Simpler to use is sujective. Me after 10 min of mac=:facewall: other people=:)
its all an opinion.

@OP, what are you planning to do with this laptop besides steam games?
 
I'm going to need to agree that macbooks are over priced and arent the best if you want to game. However, he could run windows on the macbook if he desired. I personally will not buy an apple product because of all the issues my friends have had with their macbooks and iphones.

If you have your heart set on the mac go for it, however I will stress that not all games have support for the mac OS. So you may want to invest in the mac booting program so you can install windows on the machine as well.
 
I have a CyberPower PC laptop from 2008, so 2 years ago and it works fine.

C2D 2.4GHz
8600GT M
4GB DDR2 667 (was 2)
250GB 7200 RPM (was 160)

it cost 1100$ back then and works perfectly fine til this day. My friend has an ASUS laptop bought couple months after I bought mine, his still works fine.

Both of our laptops play all games without any additional crossover programs. So saying Windows Based Laptops are not as good as MacBooks, just depends on who you buy it from. Back when I bought my laptop, the same specs for a MacBook (Pro, I think) was 2500$. Sure it doesn't crash, doesn't have many viruses, could survive a fire, but it does one the thing the average gamer cares about, play games. (If you count crossover programs then yes it can but not even half as well, like WINE on Linux).

So it would be a lot (A LOT) more beneficial to buy a Windows based laptop if you want to play games like BC2, Source games, WoW, EVE, Crysis, Fallout 3, whatever game you want.

Lol, I'm not stupid. I know previous Macbook Pros are good. But the new i7 gens have had heating problems. Google it. Read tech news. It's all over there.

I don't mind the new Macbook's. They have decent specs and looks totally shmexii. But they are a bit overpriced and those Asus i7 notebooks are snazzy. On that same note, the Macbook's allegedly have great battery life. Which is great for a student's life especially on campus.
 
If you want Superior quality buy a mac, it can literally do anything as windows machine can. Why? Well not only can it soon be able to run steam, but it can run windows emulators like "crossover games" which runs windows programs without running windows. Also it can run windows using bootcamp and to be honest it runs better than it does on a normal PC. I'm not saying pcs suck, but in my opinion and statistically they crash less, get less viruses, last longer, and hold their value. Also they can do anything a windows computer can because it can run windows. I was a long time mac hater and pc lover, I switched to mac after using them in school and I wlll never go back.


Go look on ebay for a Ibook g4 they're run anywhere from about $300-$800 and they're almost 7 years old, go find a 7 year old PC and tell me how much that drops in price. I remember I bought an HP DV9500 for $2200 a year later I sold it for $900 with a external hard drive and a bunch of software. Thats when I switched to mac and bought the first gen macbook pros, I bought it for $1700 new on craigslist ($2300 retail) and sold it again a year later when the gen 2s came out for $1400. Not only did I buy it for less than the HP but I sold it for $500 more. Why does this happen? Simple mac doesn't come out with a new computer every 3 days, while they're literally a new pc out every day.

Not true at all, they do not fail at gaming. Why? Because one I can run windows therefore I can run any program your computer can. Second I can install emulators like crossover games and play any game I want while still being on mac and not even having to install windows. And third I can run windows virtual machines again being able to do anything you pc can.

From ALL the post I have seen. You bash PC at every moment but this made me LOL

Anyways If you/parents are willing to spend the extra dough on the Mac with the specs you want then do it. The crossover programs for it to play window games are not bad... But there not that great. The battery life on the Mac's are good but with any intensive graphic game you are going to be draining the battery fast.

As for the other stuff about viruses and crashes on PC..... Don't be computer illiterate.... Really how can you let stuff like that happen to your PC? Unless you get really unlucky with stuff. Just be smart about what you do with your computer.

Well The choice is really yours on what you want. We can only really give you input on the choices you give us. Just be happy and thankful for for what you get :D
