I think it would be cool, and I agree with Deacon that having an @edgegamers.org email routing server that could make eGO tens of thousands of dollars per year to cover our servers is great.

i think i'd pay up to $20 a month. But for that 20 i expect to have some pretty sweet perks that will make my gmail cry itself to sleep.

I doubt there would be that many users that would actually sign up. If you look at the numbers, yes there are 30,000 registered users on the forums. Less than 9% of those users have made above 50 posts since registering (this is across the three years the forums has been active). The actual number of people who have donated previously (the same people who would be more likely to actually pay for this type of service) barely breaks 1,000 - and that includes one time donors, and those no longer part of the community. Honestly, I'd say the service would be doing well if it could get over 300-500 users at the $1 a month price point.

That said, anything that helps keep the servers alive is a good thing! I'm certainly interested in how this or other subscription-based services might be implemented.

When you put it that way, you have a point. I was just speculating best case scenario. I want the servers supported as well as i love the servers we have. However, i would love to see a ton of extra money after all is said and done so we could get prizes and whatnot.
 
So, what perks would we be getting? Until I know, it's "no" for now.
 
For $1 a month aren't the servers perks enough? :D

I pay $4 per month to play on another community server. I have two options 1. play on their pub or 2. play on the reserved slot server. A bunch of my work buddies do the same thing. I'm also 35 w/ a full time job so the money isn't a huge deal.

That being said, $1 could get you email, but if you want perks you must first state what perk you want and then how much you're willing to pay.

Why couldn't $4 get you a reserved slot and an email address. I'm not suggesting reserved slots on pub servers, but I am illustrating that you need to decide what the definition of "is" is before moving forward.

depending on what went with it i could see paying up to 10$ but if its just a email i would really have to out do my gmail.
 
I already have one. It's called my PM inbox.

I like seeing us explore new ideas for supporting our servers. But this isn't one I see as viable...at least, not with it being practical at the same time.

99% of the clan doesn't get more than a couple PMs per week if I had to bet. Maybe our advisors and above are a little more burdened with division leaders and council members especially receiving them, but even them - I know they're not as burdened with messages as we were when we had so few advisors and such.

What am I going to use an edgegamers.org email address for? Put in on my resume? Yeah ok it can be great to say "I've admined servers", "I've moderated a forum of so many thousand", etc. But in the grand scheme of things, you don't want "edgegamers.org" for any professional use. ...I'm going to assume this wasn't one of the intended uses, though.

If it's just to be one of the cool cats so that you can tell your fellow gamers an edgegamers.org address, well that's all well and good...but paying monthly for it?

I'd go $1 a month if I had use for it, like if I was an advisor or DL or was heavily involved in some inter-eGO programs, but that's the only scenario, and that scenario exists because then it'd be practical.

If it's just to help out the clan..I like helping, but I won't pay $5 for an email address. I already have several that are working fine, and I have my PM inbox for anything else. And if it was $1 a month, I'd rather just donate $15 or $20 every several months as I'm able, which I have (and should be doing again here within the next month or two.)

Not to mention, "subscription" based payment is never good. It makes people feel like they're paying more than they are.

If you told me "$12 for an EdgeGamers.org email address for a year", I'd say "Hey, that's not too bad."

If you told me "$1 a month for an edgegamers email address." I'd say "...what? Why in the hell would I pay monthly for that?"

Maybe that doesn't make sense, but it's the truth. I HATE having "upcoming" payments lingering. Of any amount. Even if it's just a dollar. If I'm going to pay $12 for a year's email, I want to just do it and be able to calculate that and log it away. Not pay month...per month...per month again.

My personal opinion, we've got more important things to consider and think about.

Reading Deacon's one post about it forwarding mail, that doesn't sound too bad. I'd pay $12 for a year's worth, but not a subscription based payment. I'd do it so that when I gave it out to people, I'd be advertising the clan's name and the like.

A question on that, though. If it directed things to say, my gmail box, would I then when I responded to it be sending out my gmail address? Because that I'm not so sure about, could get confusing.
 
What more could an @edgegamers e-mail address could bring to me more than my personal e-mail does? Plus, i don't like the idea of paying to communicate but i understand it's a way of increasing the servers's budgets though.

In gmail you have the option to setup multiple accounts. You would enter your ego email address and they would send a verification emaio to that account.

Once you click on the verification link you have a drop down option that lets you change your sender info. (i.e. [email protected], [email protected], [email protected])

I have about 5 accounts that I can send from within gmail so the mail will appear to be sent from the @domain account.
 
I think the idea of an edgegamers email is a great idea,
however i'm not too big on a monthly payment to sustain one.

I would however pay, if there was a decent one time fee. ;]
 
Why pay for this when I could get an AOL, Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc. email address for free. Not to mention I get one from my school and from my many websites I own. I don't think people should be forced to pay for something that can be gotten for free anywhere else.
 
I believe this is a great idea and hopefully we get enough support on this.

Side Note: Added perks with the email cost will bring in more peeps :)
 
Neat idea...but its not worth money for. ( my 2cents) Just like Zegz said most are free anyway
