Over Clocking Results

Hey all,

So today I tried and (I think) succeeded in overclocking my new Intel i5-750. Here are the results:

Is there anything you think I should change (or anything that you think I did wrong/should change immediately) and how do you think I did?

I wonder how long your processor will last with that 900mhz jump
 
So is it bad that I made that big of a increase? Should I decrease anything?

Overclocking overall sounds good, but it really isn't. Your forcing your CPU to run faster than it was designed, shortening it's life, and risking hardware failure.

Your pretty much risking a lot for minimal gain.

So your saying I should turn it down a little? Maybe down to around 3.2 GHz?

I'd recommend simply not overclocking at all. But yes, turn it down a lot. 900mhz is a large jump, you might hit problems early.
 
Well, I took your advice and just turned things back on auto (what they were on before).

Unless you have water cooling IMHO, you shouldn't overclock more than 400mhz. The more power you put to your CPU, the hotter it gets. When the CPU gets hot, then lets say you power off your PC, it cools rapidly. The rapid change in temperature causes minute changes in the physical aspect of your CPU and MOBO.
 
Overclocking is not bad, guys. And the megahertz doesn't matter, it could be a 4000MHz increase, or just your 900MHz, the would produce the same heat ONLY IF THEY HAVE THE SAME VOLTAGE. So don't worry about the megahertz, only the voltage.
That being said, I would look up an overclocking guide (for your processor), as 1.4v is rather high.

Just b/c the cpu is set to a specific clock speed, this case being 2.66 GHz, doesn't mean that it is the cpu's max limit.


Was that 3.9GHz overclock stable?
 
32nm procs are really good at oc'ing

No, the 3.9GHz wasn't stable. But I turned it down to about 3.7GHz and it became stable.

If you want the best overclocking processor, go i5 or i7. Or if you really want to get some high overclocks, the i3 is pretty sweet.

BASS is correct. The amount you overclock does not matter. Even the voltage is not too big of a deal. Its the temperature that will kill the chip or shorten its lifespan. If your temps stay below the max recommended manufacturer's specs, your fine. I would recommended also keeping the voltage below max rec specs as well just for piece of mind.

My OC gets upto 66c in game and 82c under full load. Max spec'd temp from intel is 68c so im safe. But, its not like im stressing with IBT everyday of the week, only when tweaking. I wont be stressing for a while now as im very happy where im at.

YES, i3's clock like crazy . I got mine to 4.2 first try . Just remember , these chips are very sensitive and you could easily kill it with 1.4vcore. I'm currently using 1.3vcore and knocked it down to 4.0ghz . As it got warmer in Michigan, im idling at 31c and loading at 59c. BTW- $24 CPU cooler- CM Hyper 212 +

CAREFUL WITH THE 32NM CHIPS EVERYONE ! ! !

I would go ahead and check both the Termal Specification and VID Voltage Range for your processor on Intel's website. These figures will give you a rough guideline as to "how high is too high".

For instance, my processor is listed here.

I'm pushing my chip pretty hard (150% OC @3.6GHz), but as its load temps fall below 60*C and I keep it's Voltage below 1.5V, I'm still running the chip within Intel's Processor Specifications, and nothing I'm doing is seriously degrading the processors lifespan.

Overclocking will probably make your proccesor last 8 years instead of 10.

Who's going to keep it for that long anyway.

Ocin'g is perfectly safe, -most- people that know how to do it do it. The performance boost is pretty substantial and definitely worth it. Proccesors these days are pretty much built for overclocking, we aren't talking about old technology with high nm.

Games that run on source engine you can net almost ~20 or more fps ocing.
