Joining the United States Army.

Basically , I'm 17 right now and need to be 18 to enlist , I would like to hear from some real soldiers out there what it is really to be in the army . Don't say go talk to your local recruiter .. because they'll lie their butts of for you to sign that paper.

I would like to join the marines to get some credibility for some years and later join the secret service , I'd like to guard the main man some day .

What are your opinions / thoughts if you are a soldier or ex-solider please give me some advice.

Marines i think would be good. Or Coast Guard. That way you get experience with water, but also helps with land training in some ways (weaponry, etc)
 
My grandpa always rambles on about how the Army soldiers are a bunch of "cats" and the Marines are real men. But it's honestly a decision that you have to make yourself. Deep down your going to have to see where your heart guides you.
 
I'd say you should go for army then go into Green beret after few years in the regular army.
But go to college first because going in as a officer is great.

I am 19, and when i was in high school my plan was to join the marines. I talked to recruiters and stuff, and yea they can be nice, but they can lie to just get you to join, every person that signs up gives that recruiter a nice amount of $$.
I never ended up joining but it is always a backup option

IN MY OPINION, id join the Army, marines are cool and all, but the army offers more (im not bashing on the marines at all)

Try and look into it more though, and figure out the requirements are for jobs you want in the future so that you can pick the proper MOS when you sign up.
 
Marines to secret service sounds awesome. I saw a documentary on secret service, they're intense.
But whatever you think fits YOU man, good luck (:
 
*waits for actual vet/active duty soldier to post* Grandfather was a marine. He said he was a good thing for him seeing as how him and my uncle used to raise hell and be crazy. As im typing this he is telling me what to write. This is his opinion: Join the Marines, they are the best.
 
I would suggest that before you join any branch, figure out who does the job you want and how they got the job. Figure out which branch is responsible for the Presidents safety, then figure out what you would have to do to be qualified for that job. Don't expect the recruiter to tell you this info. Their job in the military is to recruit new people and they are judged by how many soldiers they enlist. Don't blame them for you not doing your homework.

i would say go Marines.
im working on getting in shape to enlist in the Marines. i looked into all the different branches and found that the Marines would be the best. if you have any question you can ask me and ill try to answer them for you. another reason im joining the Marines is because i got family in the Marines so its in the family to be a Marine.
but what ever branch you go into Semper Fidelis and good luck. :)

for the job its all based on the ASVAB test you have to take. then that tells you what job you can do.
 
If you want to become a guard for the Commander in Chief you have to be a Marine, there are no soldiers guarding him its just Secret Service and Marines. I'm a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, I have family in all branches of the military and i'm the second Marine in my family. If your main goal is to be the best that there is when it comes to war and knowing you earned your right to be a Marine then join the Marines.

If your just looking for college money go for Air Force or Navy. If you have any more questions about the Marines go ahead and pm me on the forum or add me on steam.

I enjoyed the Army - 4 years active, 2 years Guard and 2 years IRR - my brother is also in the Army now, just got back from Iraq, kid is lucky, haveing survived unscathed several direct IED explosions while on patrol.

It all comes down to your MOS, what do you want to do - I was a Bradley crewmember, and earned the gunners position as an E-4 in an NCOs position. I held the 3rd highest score on Fort Hood for Live Fire Bradley Range... 956/1000 ... I also got to work with the Master Gunners and learned the Bradley Sight/Gun system inside and out. I was in Air Defence Artillery - at that time, we held a Stinger crew in the back of the Bradley - as I was ETS'ing, we were fielding the Bradley Linebacker, see here >> http://www.army-technology.com/projects/linebacker/

If you're joining for the "Glory and Honor", I would reconnmend joining the Marines.

If you're joining for the money, Do NOT Join the Marines. They're poorly funded, but are trained very well but paid poorly.

We make the same amount of money as every other branch, if you mean the Marine Corps has a less funding as the other branches then yes your right, but we make up for it in our training because we don't need to rely on technology to kick ass.
