DoD Morale and You: Divisional Commentary

I've been thinking about this since I started reading that giant thread by Garden about morale in eGO...and I'd like to get the real impressions that our longtime DoD guys have about everything. That thread is nice and all, but it keeps getting hijacked by individual divisions.

I've gone ahead and responded personally to a few of the DoD-specific comments (or general ones that are relevant). Please, if you have some comments, I (and the rest of DoD Leadership by association) would love to hear them. If you can't post them here for some reason, you know what to do: Advisors or the Drop Box. You guys know what is and isn't acceptable to talk about in public, and what should be saved for private. I'll lay some of my cards on the table...let's see what you have to show.

Ground Rules: No need for anybody to respond to each post, like has happened there; say your piece, observe and consider, consolidate your thoughts into one post, THEN post it. There's nothing I (and many others) hate more than when 15 of 40 replies are the same person; it's counterproductive and makes the thread look like so much more.

The community's listening, and would like your input. How do YOU think DoD is doing, and where can we improve?

==================================================

1.) All the griping about wanting more realism events. (and not just limited to that thread!)

- Come on guys, this is common sense already. I'm actually a bit concerned that I have to explain this one; it should be obvious. Yes, we know that realism is the most popular DoD event. It's so popular that it easily can have as many players as Wild Card and Quick-Draw combined. But what does that actually tell you? Nobody's coming to our other events. If people aren't willing to show up, we're not going to do more prestigious events such as Royal Rumbles and Dog Tag Scrims.

Sure, we could do realism twice a week or more. But what does that mean? You can just skip one and come to another. That's nice. In turn, however, it means that the event becomes disposable, and loses its luster when you have five a week. Stormy has done a fantastic job developing and running this for weeks (26 now? That's HALF A YEAR!); that's terrific, and we're glad to see something take off as well as this has. The next problem we have is in logistics; you need somebody to actually RUN the event, and you can't count on somebody for every day of the week. Hopefully you guys get the point here.

TL;DR: Multiple realisms per week are not really on the table at this time. It's just not a good option.

2.) Recruiting

-Recruiting is a game, and one that I've always failed at. I try, but never really get anywhere. I'm sure that some of you are the same way. We're doing our best, but it's just not as simple as it sounds, and thank you to everyone who is out there working on it. We're trying to come up with new recruiting "stuff" for our divisional group. I'm going to skip my commentary about the denied application that was mentioned in the morale thread because of the "unified front in public" policy that I teach in Admin 101/Advanced Admin Training, but please do your best to get long-time pubbers into this clan. Players with a genuine interest are hard to come by, and we want them here. Again, this should be common sense.

3.) "Strictness of admining"

- ...to be perfectly honest, I don't think this is a problem here in DoD. We don't sit around and watch people break the rules, then try to decide who gets the honor of warning them; we come out and hit the binds, follow warn/kick/ban, and get the job done quickly and efficiently so that we all can have fun. Not a DoD problem at all, from what I've seen.

4.) Divisional Impressions
- I was glad to read things like this:
Thykon said:
My experiences with our TF2 and DOD:S divisions were outstanding. Rank was unimportant, e, eG, eGO, all outstanding community members.

This is what we strive for here at eGO: people coming to play with us, having fun, and quite frankly, not caring about rank. I don't have a problem when people join servers, and would rather play with our members. There's a certain inherent level of quality associated with our members.

...but when I see posts on the steam group (that's especially for tf2) going like " HALP ME IN SERVER LOLOL"...

I hope none of you feel this way about us, and if so, please bring it up in the appropriate venues. We strive for professionalism here...quite honestly, that sort of derailed the entire topic with a bunch of nonsense that really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things if it actually works and fills servers. If TP can take a server from 0 to 32 with that, I support it.

5.) The Admin Training Program

-Yes, I know that we've been lacking a bit lately with classes, and not to make excuses, but it's a busy time of year for all four of us. We're hoping to get more up in the near future, but it's a little disheartening when you have a giant promotion cycle and a class right after the divisional meeting where it's announced, and you have two people show up. Two. It's a little frustrating.

I've read the commentary about making some minor changes to Admin 101, and hope that we can contribute to any amending process.

6.) Server Numbers

-Of course, we'd love to see all of our servers in the top 10, and we're trying to improve them all, but it's not as simple as it may sound, trust me. Right now, I believe that we have more servers than any other division...and we have more in the top 150 (all of them, at least count) than the other divisions combined. That's FANTASTIC, and I hope to see this trend continue.

This is just the beginning; I would like to hear what you guys think about "morale" and related topics, on a level specific to this division. Thank you! :)

I agree with you Jeod. Especially about the strictness of Admin. People think Admins are strict on the servers way to often especially if they get kicked after being warned. People must understand that Admins are there to stop the rule breakers and make the servers fun to everyone on DOD. If it wasnt for admins on the servers there would be way to many problems being caused and people wouldnt enjoy them very much.

1.) All the griping about wanting more realism events. (and not just limited to that thread!)

I agree realism once a week right now works out perfectly. If we start doing more than that, I feel the event will lose some of its appeal. I do believe, however, that we could try giving priority to dods division members over others. But again, what we have currently works fine.

2.) Recruiting

I believe we are doing a great job recruiting. I will stress as always, that I believe in quality over quantity. I usually pull in an average of 5 recruits a month. If they are good people, 5 is enough for me.

3.) "Strictness of admining"

Yup just like Jeod said, we don't have much of a problem in this area. Just remember warn kick ban. Also remember a lot of adminning is common sense.

4.) Divisional Impressions

I personally think DoDS division has the best reputation in this community. We have the best admins, the most active members (generally), and some of the friendliest people I have ever met. I do encourage more of you to jump on ventrilo and hang around.

5.) The Admin Training Program

Nothing to say here.

6.) Server Numbers

Yeh avalanche has the current number 1 spot on gametracker and thats great. We both need to maintain our current high ranks, and boost up our other servers. I wouldnt worry about colmar at the moment. Lets get donner kalt and flash up first. I know a lot of people say we need more people seeding servers, but to be honest, I dont think seeding helps much. We need people playing in the servers, not sitting idle and I think with summer coming up we will have a lot more traffic.

Just my thoughts

I have to agree here also, I feel we have the best people in the community. If you ever want to have a few laughs and a good time you can always pop into a DoD vent room.

Nice post Jeod.

Great post Jeod, nothing I can disagree with in there.

In my opinion giving priority to one division over other divisions and regular players would start alienating those from even trying to partake in any event, because lets face it we have more than 32 members of any division who want to join in on events. "First come, first serve" seems to be the most fair system as to getting a spot. If you really want to attend the event get there early to be sure you get a spot, don't show up at the starting time and assume you'll get a spot.

Another thing, don't ask if you can kick a pub to make room for an eGO member, that is just a terrible thing to do. Why oh why would you ever ask: "Can you please kick a pub to make room for an eGO member?" That person is a guest on our servers, you should treat them with the same respect and courtesy you expect to be shown as a guest elsewhere. Don't make them feel like they aren't welcome by saying things like that, just be patient and somebody will leave at some point and you or that person can get in.

Well that's just my two cents, so I think I'll stop there since I'm starting to get off track.

This is so true. I think if we can at least recruit more regulars, we can have some of those quality members who actually hop on and play. DoD took a hit when eGO took on all these other games. I watched the DoD division begin to lose some of these quality people after TF2 came to eGO back in early 2008. When I come back to play a little DoD and get involved with the community again...honestly, I'm surprised to see it still a fairly active division in eGO still, and I think the credit goes to the divisions leaders and recruiters who keep everything moving along, and I'm thankful for it.

Thanks to all the DoD leadership, past and present.

I see one problem and that is admin's have to use their own discretion on the rule's and we are different people so we get different view's which sometime's come out in the game. I disagree when one admin's state's his view then it is changed in open chat by a senior admin. Like the swearing, an admin with high morals will say "watch your language" for minor swear word ( in my opinion there is no such thing as minor, swearing is swearing) and in game we should support him , One thing which is not available is a list of acceptable swear word's. If you dont agree you should mention it in private otherwise support is the key word nothing knock's a person harder than not getting support.

You beat me to it, very well said.. Especially when it's said in open chat.

I know im not a DoD member, but im going to post here anyway, relating to DoD.

I find that theres competition between the regulars of each server. Its kinda annoying when i visit avalanche and people are saying "Flash sucks" "why would you even go on flash"

Thats what annoys me

Usually its a big inside joke between the whole DoD division.....

"Usually" being the key word

Okay then,"always".

Is that better?

When you see members doing this, take it as a joke. They either want the current member who is about to leave to stay on the server with them, or they have just played too much of that one map recently.

It's not like this happens on DoD servers only..

Houses are a banned topic around here..

you can talk about houses but i dont think they will be comming back

i would have to agree with you..overall, im happy with eGO and the DODs division...dont really have much of anything to complain about...most of our people are great in game and the admins back each other up 9 times outta 10...great atmosphere to game and admin in..

Great post! Agree on all points.

The only problem that I see, and have seen since my 2 years being here, is that eGO love eachother so much that we always join the same team, and than unbalanced teams because the eGO team always loses. :P Plus it might make admining a bit hard on the opposite team if no1 is over there.
