Horrible Drop In FPS

I've been having this problem ever since I got this computer about 2-3 months ago and it appears to only effect source games. Sometimes it happens when really extreme explosions go off and other sorts, but I get REALLY, really bad FPS drop and it fumbles between 1-10 fps. I can't stand it and its gotten to a point to annoyance. I've tried reinstalling gc drivers and defragging, verifying cache, etc. Nothing. I'm wondering if it's a vista problem, or a hard drive speed problem. I get around 100 FPS not on vsync. So I know its not a graphic card problem. Could it possibly be bad ram?

  1. Being rude isn't going to help you AT ALL. I am voulenteering my help.
  2. You are not being clear in your post. Internal problem and FPS problem are the same thing, your case color makes no difference.
  3. You should take someones advice before you discourage it.


 
I have 100 FPS tops. It even goes over it. I don't think your idea would help.
 
I hightly doubt that you were getting 100FPS. Your graphics card is pretty terrible, If you can, the greatest increase would be to get a better one.

A graphics chipset like the 9100 is going to have trouble with the high poly count of Source multiplayer games. The explosions and things you mention are particularly bad system hogs. Muzzle flash, bullet tracers, rocket trails, blood impact etc. are all resource intensive once you start to multiply those effects times 24-32 players. It is not unheard of to chug along at 5-10 fps in a heavy firefight in a game like TF2 if your system is low end or old (like mine).

Which source games are you trying to play BTW?

Edit: A little reading shows that a lot of nvidia gf 9100 owners are complaining about improper HSF seals leading to overheating. This is not uncommon toward the lower end of the GPU market.

You seem to have a decent computer, except the graphics card. Do some changes to your config, and start saving for a ATI 5xxx series card. I say ATI because I am assuming you want to budget a bit and your still on a top-tier series cards (I'm not trying to start a fan boy rage fest)

What games have you been playing? You say you have vsync turned off, correct?
 
Kyuki I've had this problem because I basically have the same computer as you the HP pavillion m8530f. You need to get a new gfx card the Nvidia 9100 GE is made for Media related stuff like 1080p videos/movies and possibly even work.
For me I got the ATI Radeon 5750 for $140 at Fry's. My computer works great now and I also got Windows 7 x64 Home Premium for free.

P.S. Directx Level is based on your Graphics card not actually updating the software/program

Thanks I was beginning to think it was bad ram, but I guess its the graphics card. The only real game that's giving me the fps fuss is Insurgency, it's just random. CSS has happened once or twice, but since the update it hasn't.

Yeah. If you post a budget, then I'm sure we could help you pick out a graphics card.
 
Typically maybe around 50 to 90$ Maybe a little over that max price range, but its all up to my parents, and if they'll believe me about the problem as well...
 
1. Put dent in side of pc tower
2. claim that your video card broke when your PC "fell"
3. show parents terrible lag
4.buy new card such as, radeon 5670
5.???
6. profit

Or you could skip step one, but breaking things is fun
 
LoL. Well me and my friend were messing around last night and he told me he was monitoring his heat intake on the computer. So he gave me advice to download CPUID Hardware Monitor, turns out my computer's graphics card is exceeding 210 Degree's at idle. So either A) I get it cleaned out, or B) Sooner or later it'll give....

your parents will be like :

"OMG THAT IS UNSAFE FOR OUR CHILD!!!! HE/SHE COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED WE MUST BUY A SAFER COMPUTER!!!!!!!!!!!!111ONE!!!111"

or something like that
