The end of ATI..

One thing Ive loved about ATi since AMD took them over they're prices really have been cheaper since AMD can also make the processing units for the cards and Im sure they have been seeing as it save on production time and cost. Not saying I dont like Nvidia (had a 7600GTO and 9600 GT) but for price ATi just has been a better deal (bought a 4870 for 225$ a year and a half ago) well unless you also got a Radeon 5850 for free :D!

Ill still be buying ATi/AMD GPUs as long as they stand up to their expectations unless Nvidia really wows me and I have money laying around, thought the one thing I like about them is PhysX but with a Core i7, there's no need for a PhysX processing unit...

All in all hopefully its for the better...
 
I remember right after AMD bought ATI. Their processors were garbage that barely competed with Intel, and they rapidly drove into the ground successful ATI video card lines.
They finally have been turning it around lately with their video cards. I purchased my first ATI video card in years for my current gaming computer.
However, AMD still needs to get their processors sorted out before they integrate a video card into it. Not only do their processors like to run hot, but cycle for cycle they still do less than Intel's chips.

Now, the direction I would like AMD to take:
Make a new standard for processors. The current standard is based off the older standards which were based off of even older standards. There really hasn't been a major change in the way computers work at the base levels in decades.
Our latest advancements allow the computers to handle the terrible way of processing fast enough they don't noticably lag for routine tasks, but they are still horrendously inefficient.

Now that I have successfully insulted AMD, intel, and pretty much every one of you that likes how computers now-adays operate, I'll throw one last log on the fire. Hackintoshes are better than any mac! Thanks all!!!
 
From what I've read; they're just changing the name from ATI to AMD. Not like the Radeon series will disappear and AMD's only game plan is to start making integrated chips only If you do a bit more research, one of the reasons was because having one name would help brand awareness.
ATI just barely took marketshare recently, the 6xxx series are on the way and stock prices have risen. AMD won't trash them when they're making so much money.

It's not like the OCZ/PC Power&Cooling buyout *shudders*
 
To me it sounds like they want to consolidate their branding, so they can have a "bigger market share".

AMD will likely have the #1 largest share in PC components now that the 2 brands are combined.

For those confused, Radeon cards will be the same, But the ATI title will be changed to AMD.

So instead of ATI Radeon HD 6870, it will be:

AMD Radeon HD 6870.
 
I don't understand what opinions there are....

They are just incorporating ATI into the AMD branding. They aren't changing anything about ATI cards.

FYI, that is not how business and financial reports are done. AMD's market share will be broken down into its products; CPUs and GPUS. To combine the two to say they have a greater market share of all PC markets is absurd because GPUs do NOT compete directly against CPUs. Same for Memory and Hard drive manufacturers. I doubt GEIL will analyze its market share against Western Digital. Apples and Oranges. They're different, keep the separate.

And what Phobus said is true. There ARE NO CHANGES in products; its just killing a brand name. Remember BP? They bought out ConocoPhilips, which was one of the largest oil companies in the US. The two merged, and agreed to use the BP brand name.

The entire thing can be broken down into:

AMD bought ATI years ago
AMD makes ATI products now
AMD kills ATI brand
AMD continues making products.
 
You could also put it like how AT&T merged with Cingular (and Bellsouth I believe) but kept their name. Same with Nextel and Sprint, and soon to be Verizon and Alltel.
