My ping

My ping on Counter Strike Source is OUTRAGEOUSLY High for some reason. No one is downloading anything in my house. Only 2 computers are running and i am hardwired in. Our router says it can handle 5 computers, but my ping is about on average 800 all of a sudden! Can someone please help me!

If you haven't changed anything recently, it's your ISP acting up.

about ~once a year, my modem randomly breaks, I get exactly what you discribe (High ping, etc.), call up your ISP and ask for a new one. Most likely they will give you a new modem, or charge a small fee.

why does everyone jump to a conclusion so quickly...

run virus scans, they will use resource and can and will jack your ping up.
check for programs running in the background and disable them... ie your antivirus is set to run a scan at x:xx time... windows update is set to run at x:xx time. These things will also jack your ping up.

it also wouldnt hurt to restart your modem.. unplug it, count to 15 and plug it back in, let it boot and that is done.

ok so i did the speed test thing and it gave me a download speed of 4.04 upload of .24 and ping 666 ms and i didnt understand how to do the ping test thing on pingtest.com

also i have restarted my modem at least 4 times today plus my interenet works fine until when im playing css and i click shift tab and open the internet there

Call up your ISP, and demand a new modem (use a polite manner)

I would get absolutely horrendous ping when I would join Highschool. I found on my internet tab (in CSS Find Servers menu) was searching for games. I clicked on Stop Refresh at the bottom-right of the menu and it returned my ping back to normal.

another thing I found to happen after 1 of the many Steam updates is... Steam will attempt to update your games while you are playing. This ofcourse causes a high ping and most of the time, lag outs.

Multiple reasons:

Either,

1. You're infected, by a spyware.
2. You're capped for exceeding your bandwith.
