Back before the grand exchange where you could make a fortune in one day crafting jewelry and enchanting it
Where you could make 30k a pop recharging amulets of glory
Where you could have a friend help you carry stuff to and from the bank without having to worry about daily price limits.
Where you could stand in Varroc west bank or Falador east bank for a day spamming "buying xxx" or "selling xxx" or "bank sale" and make a fortune, or spend all of your money!

Actually without the grand exchange the game would be dead. Becuase of no trade limits real world trading was far to easy. That is one of the biggest reason they needed it there are many more. If it wasn't for the GE RS would be dead.

When i joined a long time ago, there were well over 10 worlds full, and every server had over 1k people on it. Why do you think they raised the games price from 5 to 7. (Wasn't the graphics)
These things KILLED runescape. Its recovering but it' gonna take awhile till it's back to it's former glory.

There used to be lines to get into some worlds because they were so popular.
Yea, real world trading was a problem for them, but why? Its not because it disuades players from playing. Its because it means people won't spend as much time giving jagex money (lets face it, you don't pay real world money for non-members stuff other than gp) and will give that money to someone else instead....who will then go back into runescape and give jagex more money while they got more stuff to sell.
You can make a fortune in runescape by farming at something for hours on end before actually getting gear and playing, all real world trading did was make it so you wouldn't have to waste that time.
Runescape used to be enormously popular, now it is somewhat of a joke in other games. Just go into CS:s and mention runescape, and see the flames get started.
Now, before the flames get any higher... Anyone want to buy my abyssal whip? I could use the 2+ mil profit I would get from it (jk, i'm not memebers anymore, so I can't sell it
)

The problem is if I get membership back, I probably will be using it
