What is the best antivirus software?

i'd like to know for my sake and others
i've heard that kapersky is top notch but other say otherwise
i figure with such a large user base as eGO i might get enough answers to get a clear difinitive answer as to which antivirus is best

between kapersky
avast
AVG
norton
and McAfee
or some other one i forgot or don't know about

my cousin is getting a new computer and usually goes to me for computer advice
though i have spent a large amount of time relentlessly bringing my computer from the brink of extinction over the past 6 years and know it like the back of my hand
my antivirus software has usually been something i rarely handle and just trust it works

i'd like to know for future reference and to tell my cousin, which antivirus she should use and that would be best

I've heard Kapersky is pretty good. But I agree with Cut, Norton and McAfee are both fail.

I have been installing AVG onto computers for friends and family for several years now. Never had any issues with virus's on any of them. I have used norton and mcafee in the past, but never did get any good customer service from them. Just my opinion, but the free version of AVG has been very good and very reliable on all the computers I have used it on.

I've been using Avira AntirVir for two years now and I haven't had any problems. Best virus protection is being a smart user, though.

Oh, and I also suggest taking Norton and McAfee off the list. They're utterly worthless and take up way way waaaaay too much processing power.

The best anti-virus set up is definitely:
Avira AntiVir for general protection
Spybot Search and Destroy for a little more protection
Malwarebytes for when you know you have a virus.
All three are free, too.

I work as a computer technician. Avira and Microsoft Security Essentials impress the hell out of me for being free anti- viruses.

Norton 2010 reviews are good but Norton still hoses your internet connection if not removed correctly, so no Norton.

Kaspersky is okay but misses spyware/adware (but all anti-virus software does)

NOD32 is light on the system but meh on protection (we sell it at my work)

If you do get infected, Malwarebytes is godlike for being free and SAS is good (but warning it will try to scare the user thinking tracking cookies are infections)

so far what im seeing is its between aivra, AVG, and kapersky
and that McAfee and norton aren't so good

Avast antivirus. Firstly its free and i have used it for years without a single problem. Its so easy to customise and get the options you want. You can also do boot scan and specific locations.

Secondly, look how beautiful it looks!

The biggest problem I've heard of with AVG is that it can be pretty resource-draining. Unless I'm getting it confused with one of the other AV anti-viruses.

MSE is good for being FREE. Besides I don't even run an anti-virus, I'm not stupid enough to visit those free celeb photos sites. If I get infections I run malwarebytes.

You should run anti-virus regardless. -_-
AVG (compared to Avira and Avast) isn't that good, but it is still a good AV. It's just not the best like everyone says it is.

i want you to join those two
i mean, is avira better than kapersky even though it's free?
i want all these to be in the same catagory, all compared with each other
so we can get a true feel of antivirus supremecy

Avira for free. I'm using both on two partitions right now.

I have reservations about any free anti-virus where you can "upgrade" for money..

What exactly are they holding back in the "free" version if giving them money to upgrade is so worth it?

My vote is for Microsoft Security Essentials.
