[Guide] How to Idle in TF2 like a Pro (even on low end PC's!)

I idle in tr_walkway like a pro and alt tab to do homework. But this works too.
 
This is very nice.

I know it's embarrassing to idle, but I want some items
 
wont work in windows 7, no "target" area.
 
I'll explain how to do it on Windows 7 for you guys if you'd like.
 
id rather have a text window than having tf2 in the background. sometimes it maximizes and locks up the system.

windows 7:

make your own shortcut. in other words,
right click > new > shortcut

browse, find your steam exe, then you'll have a shortcut. then take that shortcut, right click on it, select properties.

in the target field, it should look something like this:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 440 -textmode -nosound -nopix -novid -nopreload -nojoy -sw -w 800 -h 600 +OpenTrainingDialog

updated top for those who have windows 7 and didnt figure it out.
 
I'll have to give this a whirl on my laptop (which can barely run TF2).

The main reason I sought out this idea/method is because I have 3 pc's. All three run linux, and the other two cannot really run tf2 in wine (video drivers, problems of the sort). So with this method, which I adapted to linux, I can idle 3 accounts at the same time (I have a few friends who don't use their tf2/steam accounts all that often, so I just farm it one night a week).

Since I'm in command prompt, I'll just ask here. Aren't you supposed to die to get items? Or will you get them the next time you connect to a server, then die?

you can watch what gets dropped by a backpack examiner... ie:

you usually notice the items via an alert when you start tf2. sometimes if the cloud is slow, you can force it by going to the mann co store page and it will all populate.
 
This does make it easier, but even for low end PC's, having the game minimized will use no GPU or CPU resources. But, if some people have hanging issues, this is the easiest way around it. It still uses 800mb's of RAM either way.

yeah, but my other computers cant even get to the tf2 main screen, let alone make/join a server ...
 
I prefer the join idle server Wed. night before bed to meet my weekly allowance now. Before cap, I used Source Tools.

I was very annoyed by weekly limits (at least I got most the hats I wanted before Mann Co).
 
Well, I tried it last night - got 5 items this morning! Nice method, mate. This works well for me since some weeks my load is too heavy to game.
