* Testing and tuning various class, item, and weapon changes
* Testing map changes and variants
* Running higher level, game-wide experiments (like doubling player health)
* Testing new technologies without the risk of breaking the game

Its a possibility thats being discussed.

As a side note, its pretty fun, I like some of the changes made so far but haven't played much. The 5 CP Gorge is very fun!

Basically, it's testing the various nerfs of Natascha.

there is a little more to it.

supposedly its a means for valve to more rapidly respond to balance issues as well as provide a safe ground to experiment with more radical ideas in the future.

its also an indirect way of shutting up the community rants since essentially valve will be able to SHOW the community their ideas to them through the beta.

pretty much all three nat variants were mentioned on the forums as some point.

A server would be decent since I'm planning on playing a lot of the beta. I'm yet to try the new gorge but it sounds cool.
