Highest DPI Mouse?

I have a 5900 dpi mouse but... its overkill. 2000-2500 dpi is all you'll ever need. So, my point is, WHY are they making higher dpi mice?

Probably just as a selling point :P

Also, it's not so much as they are actively 'trying' to make the highest DPI possible, the technology simply gets better, and if you can have a gazillion DPI, then well, go ahead ;D

Also, here's a nice rule of thumb to how much DPI you need:

(Horizontal Screen REsolution * 4) / Inches It Takes To Do A 360

Example:
If you play on a whooping 2560x1600 and it takes 4 inch to do a 360:

2560*4/4 = 2560
Then the highest useful DPI you'd need is about 2500

I have my DPI at 1600 or 1400 I think. It's a little sensitive at times.

I can go up to 5600, but I don't know why you ever would. I use low sens/dpi in everything, impossible to make shots in FPS games from long distances with a overly sensitive mouse that you can't make small corrections with. RTS games you also need lower sens for mouse accuracy and you usually move around your screen with hotkeys more than anything.

Maybe if you had a extremely large resolution, then it starts becoming useful, because if I was running at 800x600 I would be using 400 dpi.

<-- 1600 dpi/1.6 sens in css @ 1920x1080

The idea is you put the DPI on max for mouse movement detail so it takes in all the little motions and then turn SENSITIVITY down so that you don't go everywhere.

True at that.
But one cannot ignore the fact that subpixel accuracy is useless because all you can get is pixel representation.

The little rule of thumb I stated above comes form this.

Yes, having very high DPI makes it smoother, but there's a physical limit to which you can actually sense said movement detail.

But that said, if you paid for an expensive high DPI mouse as I did... you might as well use it all! ;D

you don't play competitively do you?

i use 5700 on my G500.

I don't; I don't play twitchfests either (or like to avoid them; looking at you cs:s and dod:s). 5900 dpi is the last "quick" change dpi setting for me atm, mostly for luls- its wayyy too hyper even with sensitivity all the way down at 1920x1080. An explanation on how to get it to actually work at those dpi settings in games would be nice- I definitely would be using all 5900 instead of like 2400 if I had means to make it viable.

Do you play RTS's?

If you don't play comp, and don;t play RTSs, then you really don;t need a high DPI mouse

I don't know any competitive player that plays with a high dpi in counter-strike, or even quake or tf2 (really twitch based games) for that matter. You can download pretty much any players config, they all run with pretty low dpi and sensitivity. The accuracy outweighs the twitch, and you have much better control. They usually max out around 1600-1800, on mouses that can do much more, with players even going as low as 400-800. Starcraft players don't even go that high, your moving around with mostly hotkeys/minimap and actual mouse movements you are making aren't very large, but you need the accuracy to box your armies and click single units and click where you need them, and click where you need to on the minimap to move, micro in starcraft is very precise, one missclick will cost you the game.

Extra dpi helps when you don't have a ton of mouse room, or using a large resolution, I just have never found a need to sacrifice the accuracy for that high of a dpi, when it's that sensitive you can see the crosshairs shake when players are nervous and their hand is just twitching a bit, which is way too sensitive.

To end the argument over high DPI being overkill, Eyefinity. 6048x1080 resolution (3 * 1080p monitor). That is all.

How much is that mouse, euro? If it's more than $80, the Razer Naga has it beat. Comparing it to its 4000dpi counterpart, I would guess it would be around $70 or $80.
