Someone more knowledgeable in the various chipsets and sockets will know more than I do about this, but the tl;dr version is: that mobo only support sockets of AM2 and up to AM2+ (which is not AM3), but your choice procesor is an AM3 socket.
Out of curiousity, why that motherboard and that processor? I'm not sure if you can even find the M3N72 anywhere reputable. eBay/Craigslist/that guy down the street MIGHT have it, but I wouldn't think that motherboard is worth the buy because you can purchase vastly superior motherboards for relatively cheap nowadays -- one that I can guarantee will work with the X4 840.
On a related note, that motherboard's not going to be able to tote around very good RAM either (the M3N72-D's selection of memory modules is laughable by today's standards. Even in its prime some modules were questionable in performance).

Looking the motherboard up, it supports only AM2/AM2+ CPU sockets, whereas the one you're looking at is an AM3 socket CPU. Some more digging around, however, points that the AM3 socket CPU would fit in a AM2+ board (whereas the opposite won't work). However, the downside is that the CPU would only be able to detect DDR2 memory with it.

The ASUS site would have made your search easier. It lists that board being compatible with all AM3 CPUs, except thuban.
As previously stated, the motherboard supports AM2/AM2+ socket CPUs (AM2+ means it supports AM3 socket CPUs), but you will not be able to benefit from DDR3 RAM.

If I were you, I would be going for the Phenom II 955 BE, but I'm still not sure if the Phenom II 965 BE would be better. I somewhat doubt that, seeing as the 965 looks like an overclocked version of the 955 and you could easily OC the 955 to 965 speeds.

got a question though, what makes a cpu expensive does it not matter on how fast it is or how many cores?
