Should I upgrade my video card?

The 275, is a great card and neither of the options you have suggested would be a "real" upgrade. The 470 is almost identical in performance and the 560 is barely better. I would wait till the price drops on the 580 as it will be the next card you will want. I personally have a similar setup.

The 470 isn't anywhere near the same performance. The 560 is a little better and a little worse (at times) than the 470. But it's much cooler, quieter, and consumes less power.

Since you are getting an actual decrease (it's official now :P ), then if you have the need to upgrade, the 560 Ti would be your best choice for $250.

That confused me. Are you saying the gtx 275 is better than the 470?

When I build my rigs, I'll spend months reading and researching everything.... but once I'm done, I stop paying attention to what's "out there" and what's new and improved.

I could pick up a second 275 for about $120. Or the 560 for $250. Which option do you think would provide the best results?


It's really not about the money. It's about "value".

It goes like this
560 ~= 470 > 275
And the 470 performs almost 40% faster than the 275.

Do you plan on overclocking? If yes, than the 560. It's a great value at $250, because with a little overclocking (1Ghz is much more attainable on this chip), it can easily match the performance of a 570, and almost a 580. And, it only consumes ~170W.
 
He did say everything was the same with the exception of the video cards, if you can find a better comparison then post it. Also the OP didn't mention the the clock speed of his GPU, for example I have the BFG pre overclocked 275, I don't know if the OP does also or not but the point i was making is that the difference is not worth the cost of the upgrade to either the 470 or the 560 and that his current 275 is far from outdated and he should hold off and buy a better card later.

FSX hardly needs much GPU power.

In any game that is even a bit GPU dependent, the 470 will be signifigantly better the 275.

That is Crysis, and there are other games in that review, and they all basically show the same thing, the 470 is much better.

I spent a lot of time this weekend, reading up on the 560s and the 470s.

And yes, your right, the 470 would be a HUGE increase in performance over the 275.

And and your right, the 560 is very similar to the 470..

What this mean is (just like you said), the 560 can become an over clocked demon. In test after test ,the 560 scored almost the same as the 570 (just a tad lower).

Sounds like a great card for the value. (Which again, i'm after value, not price).

I stopped by Fry's on my way home from work yesterday. They had 5 different 560's, but not the one i really wanted. I don't want to buy one, then be unhappy cause it's not the one I really wanted.

Anyways, the one i want is the Gigabyte 560 ti, overclocked at 950mzh for $259.

I'll be ordering it this week... curious to see how it performs.

Because a friend of mine has the same card and loves it.
 
That's a good price. I'm surprised at how competitive they are pricing that thing. Even the cards with after market coolers are competitive. I'd get a Twin Frozr II, but it doesn't have a stock clock of 950MHz. lol. What happened to the GB SOC version? It had a 1GHz stock clock.
 
I've had the card almost a week now.

Going from a GTX 275 to this GTX 560 TI (oc'ed to 950mzh), made a big jump in my frame rate.

it made the game "look smoother" and kept the fps from nose diving while looking at smoke/fire/etc.

Overall, i'm happy with it.

Good to hear!

My friend just upgraded from a 580 to a 590, he said there was a noticeable increase in performance and cooling. So at least you have something to look forward to in your next upgrade/build.

How easy was it to OC to 950MHz?
