I just got my Learners for Driving and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for someone who's just starting to learn how to drive. I drove a bit today in my School's empty parking lot and I'm struggling just to keep straight :P

God forbid I try to parallel park.

Remember to keep your eyes on the road at all times, and that it's not like a racing game from your childhood.

Don't worry about the hard stuff yet instead just focus on learning how the car handles and where it is in space. Once you know that then you can focus on stuff such as parallel parking.

Driving is so easy with an automatic. Gas is the right pedal. Brakes are the left. Pushing slightly down on the gas makes the car go forward. Pushing on the brakes makes the car stop. Hold the wheel how it feels comfortable, I drive with my hands in my lap because my steering wheel is really low, and just keep your hands in the same position. Now go drive a stick like a real man :D

I have three:

  • Don't ask your siblings to teach you how to drive
  • Never do quick sharp turns on snowy/wet roads
  • Never drive a van like a sports car

Heavy emphasis on the first and second one. Oh, and don't drive if you haven't have any sleep for roughly 3 days.

~Music, signing-off.

Stop driving an automatic right now, if you're learning in one, and put your foot down about learning in a stick-shift car. Srsly.

Why? Because anyone can drive an automatic (if you can't, shame on you for not being able to hit the gas and hold the wheel straight...), but all manual vehicles are fun to drive. Especially the ones that nearly slam you through the seat when you floor it.

I just got my permit in October, it is cool, but a permit is definitely overrated. I can't drive ONE mile without my parents flipping <snip>. I'm looking at getting a car right now, because I get my license in September.

If you can, learn on a standard, like Cacophonus said. They are relatively difficult to find, but I am determined to learn and the only car I will consider buying is one with a standard. It looks ways more fun :D.

I agree and disagree. If you're just learning how to drive and practicing, then I think an automatic would be better to basically just practice the basics. Though I do agree that a manual is much more fun. It took me awhile to learn to drive stick-shift (as it was the first car I drove, before I drove an automatic), but when i got used to it it was fun. I miss our stick-shift. We traded a Nissan Sentra for a CRV. :(

Also, word of advice. I would recommend driving safely when your parents are around (all the timer really, duh, don't go messing around). One would think that your parents would be much more inclined to let you drive if they see that you're a good driver, as opposed to having a need4speed.

Keep your eyes looking far ahead when you go straight. It's easier.

As for my own driving.. if people don't like how I drive, they should get the hell off the sidewalk.

driving was common sense to me... but others its different.
take ur time to learn it to keep it straight ur left hand 10 o clock and right hand 2 o clock and also hand over hand when turning and when u straighten out car after the turn
