Has anyone heard of a solid release date for this sequel? I remember playing the original so long ago, and been looking for any additional information about this game.

I've only heard rumors about the game. The only thing that I know for certain is that it exists.

Some of my fondest memories of gaming was playing the Planetside beta. That game was SO much fun. Battles with 100s of people and vehicles too!! I hope the sequel gets made and soon!!!

Wait...

SOE President John Smedley said that the sequel to the MMO shooter Planetside will land in March 2011.

While getting the tour of the Sony Online Denver studio, I was able to snag John Smedley to chat for a few minutes on the state of the gaming industry. We talked about SOE's biggest competitor, Blizzard, and how other MMO companies react to what the WoW-maker does, as well as what can be learned from the demise of APB's Realtime Worlds. But when I asked him to confirm whether the titles that I'd been asked out to Denver to see, Magic The Gathering Tactics and DC Universe Online, were the only games in the pipeline for SOE, Smedley dropped a bomb. Not only is he heavily invested in social and casual games, but Smedley is super excited for Sony's return to the MMOFPS genre with the tentatively titled Planetside Next. Sony has hinted at a sequel with that working title before, but this is the first time that we've gotten wind of a release window.

"We have a very big launch coming in the month of March," Smedley said. "It's a big first person shooter franchise that we're really happy with."

I took a leap of logic and asked whether it was Planetside.

"Could be," Smedley said sheepishly. "We haven't technically announced it." He then told me that I could say that he "hinted" that the new Planetside was imminent, which translates to 99% of a confirmation. "This is the farthest I've gone [discussing it with the press] and the PR people are going to shoot me."

As for why it's called Planetside Next, it appears that Smedley might have learned something from his signature franchise. "We don't have the official name for it. Planetside Next is kind of the working title," Smedley said. "We've learned some lessons with Everquest II , not one of the better moves that we've ever made. We should have called it EverQuest Something. Having Everquest I and II sit on the shelves at the same time, in hindsight, was probably not the the brightest of moves."

That's because the two fantasy MMOs are separate products which both have their own servers and audience. That will be less of a problem with Planetside, due to the small number of people still playing the 7 year old game on its one remaining server. Does Smedley think that the update will bring in more players than the first one did? Well, it's safe to say that he is excited about it.

"[Planetside Next] is the coolest god-damned game," Smedley said. "I'm so in love with that game."

That article was written in Dec '10, so it's very possible that the game has been delayed. The fact that there's been no recent talk about it on the official site is a dead give away. Either way, I'm just happy it's getting made.

^Is where i go to keep updated about PS:Next. We know very little atm. But since I spent 2 years playing the Original PS, I am looking foward to it. Seriously no other developer has even touched the potential that is MMOFPSs. I think that my best gaming experiences were in Planetside, so I am looking foward to "Next":w00t:

If you have ever had a PS account then is has been reopened for 45 days due to the recent outage. Been playing a bit and there are still quite a few people playing.

If anyone wants to hit me up in game my IGN is "Vertago"

Planetside was one of the defining moments in gaming

Who here remembers dropping from a Galaxy onto a tower to get the hack, and then open the enemy held base to attack? God, I loved that game. I have been eagerly awaiting the sequel.

What Outfits were you guys in? I was part of SuperTroopers, a top 20 outfit when I was playing.

I played with the "Vanu Sovereignty MAX Corps" until they broke up, then i joined "DARK" which is still currently active. ya should come back and play! its free for 45days if u have ever had a PS account:laugh:

I just played the game for 4 hours today and I was reminded why I quit the game....then when 12 other Outfit members logged on I was quickly reminded why I loved it.

Plus a lot of old players are comming back because of this free 45days. We even managed to Population Lock a cont! Whenever I think that this game was made 8 years ago...I wonder, why has no one ever tried the genre of MMOFPS since?

MMOFPS can be a costly venture to run since companies (based on historical models) do not collect monthly fees to offset the costs of hosting servers, troubleshooting, and wages. MMORPGs, such as WoW, do collect a monthly fee which is why that game is one of the best MMORPGs made, because the large user base provides Blizzard with a reliable revenue stream for updates, expansions, and so on.

With that said, it is possible for a company building an MMOFPS can be profitable, but will need to have outstanding controls over its money accounts because FPS buyers only pay a one-time fee. The only way to generate additional revenue is through an expansion pack.

Besides that, an MMOFPS adopting a micro-transaction model should be able to succeed fairly well, but can cause gameplay balance issues if micro-buyers are excessively "compensated" for their support.

Planetside has a monthly fee of $13 to play. What other MMOFPS games have there been that hasn't had a monthly fee?

Ah, must be hazy on my memories. I remember no monthly fees for it, for whatever reason.

Global Agenda went free last year and that's an MMOFPS.

PlanetSide Next to be unveiled at SOE Fan Faire

http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/17/planetside-next-to-be-unveiled-at-soe-fan-faire/

Even eight years after its launch, Sony Online Entertainment's PlanetSide still retains a healthy (and borderline fanatical) playerbase. This is almost certainly owed largely to the fact that PlanetSide remains one of the scant few MMOFPS games on the market. PlanetSide players, though, have been thirsting for more for quite some time. Thankfully, it appears the wait will soon be over.

Rumors have been flying for what seems like ages alongside a few sparse screenshots, but PlanetSide Next will soon be officially unveiled at the upcoming SOE Fan Faire this July. John Smedley, President of SOE, announced on his Twitter, "For all you PlanetSide Next fans, stay tuned for a big announcement at our upcoming Fan Faire in Vegas!" You heard the man! Keep your weapons in their holsters for just a while longer and keep an eye on Massively because we'll be sure to have all the freshest information as soon as it's out.
