Welcome to 1999, Nintendo Wii-U wont play DVDs

lol. Companies are just slicing their own wrists everywhere recently- Wii-U is only a rehash with HD, dreamcast control (albeit dreamcast controller brought into 21st century), and lack of DVD-support- EA takes their games off of Steam to try their "own" store (didn't they already have their own store? meh, buy my games over steam if at all possible anyways)- Skyrim is admittedly a console port (though if Oblivion was also a console port then Skyrim will still rock if they haven't changed their magical formula for what they do to console ports before they bring them to the PC)- Hitman 5 is admittedly being "dumbed down"- et.al. Notice a trend here?
 
It also doesn't play Blu-Ray discs either. That's been confirmed.

If you own Nintendo stock, I'd advise that you sell it before the Wii-U launches (or short it).

Same thing can be said of Take Two, but do it right now (if you can stomach the so far 15% loss of stock value compared to a month ago due to the latest reviews of Duke)
 
Nah, nah, nah, its gonna play Beta Max's or VHS... I see what they did there... bringing both old formats back... pfft DVDs who uses those anymore... oh wait everyone...

Nintendo stock is already in the toilet. Along with every other Japanese stock.
 
I feel like I'm stuck in a Nintendo first-party made time warp of mediocrity. It's like Project Dolphin all over again!

Oh well, if it flops, I can just wait to get the Zelda Collectors Console bundle on Black Friday for $85 at Walmart once no one cares about it.
 
All kidding aside though, no dvd playback really isn't that big of a deal. Sure every other device does it but.....that's the point, "Every Other Device Already Does It".

There's plenty to be skeptical about the Wii U, but dvd playback is a non-issue and not really that controversial in this day and age.

So... you'd buy a computer that doesn't playback DVD's/CD's? But only plays some proprietary disc?

(Ignore all Apple products as they are overpriced junk other than for a very small, very specific niche).

I can already say yes, because I bought a Dreamcast back in '99 when DVDs playback was not on every device imaginable and a Gamecube back in '03 . Was I angry that my Dreamcast only played GD-ROM discs or that my Gamecube only played those mini-discs? No, because I didn't buy it to play DVDs on.

I already have DVD playback on a number of devices, and if I didn't, I could pick up a standalone player for next to nothing to ensure that I did. It's absolutely a non-issue. The proprietary disc format isn't necessarily a smart decision on their part and it could possibly hurt them. But unless your games are going to be made on dvd discs or something that requires DVD playback (which they obviously are not), it's not that big of an issue.

got to agree inregards to All the other devices out there already do the job. No BluRay or DVD support is not super Important as I already have 4 devices for the job. And I dont see a lacking intelligence purchase like a PS3 in my future...

Also on the comment of, "You wouldnt buy a computer without DVD or CD playback". HAHAHA, I would be building it myself... so no, I wouldnt. The WiiU is basiclly Wii + HD + new remote. It'll still run Netflix which alot of people are now using for viewing movies. So a general market entry is covered..
 
Shootdangit GM, why doesn't the Chevy Volt float? Floating cars have been around since 1961.
 
They did say that everyone pretty much already has a DVD player, so why waste the cost of putting one in and all the patents if people already have something that will play DVD's? A large majority of people who'll buy a Wii U is probably gonna put it in the same room as something that can play DVD's and/or Blu-Ray, so it's barely anything it get all excited about.
