So, I don't really under stand the heat levels on your weapons, shields, and armor. Lets say my sword is level 10, will it deal more damage compared to being level 1?

Yes it will, if you look at the weapon/armor closely, you will see a light and dark blue bar. The light blue bar represents the stats of the weapon/armor is when its level 1.

The dark blue bar represents the stats of the weapon/armor at level 10.

Do shields defense stats only work when you activate your shield or is it like your body armor where you have it all the time?

the shield will ONLY help you block, when you activate it.
