No kidding, I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials on both of my machines for months now with no problems. MSE tends to score pretty well at AV-Comparatives, too.

I don't really like to use mail-in-rebates as a reason for buying a product, anyway.
 
To everyone on these forums, MSE is more than enough for us. For normal users or new users like our family members, anti-virus is a great option.

In recent testing, Norton was ranked #1 Internet Security in the world, followed closely by Kaspersky. If you have family members who do not have AV, this would be a wonderful choice for them. They don't know as much as we do and don't know how to protect themselves.

Last comment; if you have AVG-Free installed, uninstall it. It uses way to much CPU and does almost nothing. It doesn't protect against almost anything, just Malware and Spyware.
Save your CPU some trouble.

You sure about that? I've been using it for a good while now and it's stopped many viruses from infecting my machine. I personally have never had a problem with CPU Usage either. My CPU never passes 5% on idle with AVG running. I'm yet to pass 50% with a scan going, too. (High priority, not low priority/user sensitive) And that's with me doing other things somewhat CPU intensive in the background.
 
Microsoft Security Essentials is the ONLY thing I will use for the time being. It is silent, and it is very good. I couldn't ask for more of an antivirus program.
 
I use Malwarebytes. I've only gotten one virus, 5 minutes and 1 scan later, I was virus free and running smooth.

I agree tho, no need for huge AV Suites, if you know what you're doing MSE/AVG will be fine.
 
I will use avast internet security unitl i DIE, i've never had problems and I love the program. has saved me many-a-headaches...

I am 100% sure that AVG free edition does not protect against root-kits, which invite virus's to the party.
I also know for a fact that AVG free edition just does not compare to Norton, Kaspersky, and Trend Micro in tests. Kaspersky and Norton block 99% of all malicious intrusions which Trend is somewhere around 89%.

We've done the research at work to prove these points, along with the material that all of the companies send in. The company I work for also does tests in very large scales, and prove these findings.
