So I used to play Second Life back in the day. I played for about two years. The most interesting thing about Second Life is developers use it as a platform to test coding and creating 3D items/object for experience that they normally use to eventually create the video games we play today.
Second Life is one of the few video games that not only encourages the buying and trading on in-game currency, but they will even do it for you and take a percentage of the money you earn.

Back in 06 this person became the first real life millionaire playing Second Life.

This person did also.

I remember watching a show on TV once about a man that plays Second Life every day as his only real life job and makes six figures.

Back when I played, I made money, but nothing like that. I made probably 50 bucks a week selling my currency. I wish I could be as good as these people.

=/

What about that other game where some guy sold a hotel on a moon or planet for a couple million dollars?

not sure what that was. From my experience with SL, the majority of items sold are every day items you would buy in real life. Not anything crazy like that.
