First Day of College

So I started College today. I went into it fairly okay, not too "i hate school"-ish but not too excited. I thought you know, I'd see people from my high school since a lot signed up there. I didn't. I knew no one in my Math class, all of them were older, and I felt like the youngest one. I had no confidence at all.

I felt really uneasy. If you didn't know, I'm very skinny. No I'm not anorexic/bulimic. My matabolisim is extremely fast. Too fast. So I weight a little over 112 pounds. It's not fun. I was wearing all black, I didn't mean for me to I just picked out some clothes. Anyway, I wear my hair differently than most people. Straightened and flippy. People call me Bieber, but I don't have his hairstyle. To set the record straight, it's not his hairstyle exclusively, he stole it. But he's a popular pop star.

Everywhere there were judgmental eyes glaring at me. In class, I was mute, only would I talk when the teacher took role. I can honestly say, I hated my first college experience

But I know I have to get adjusted. I wanted to share cause I'm sick of judgment and torment, and I know you guys are like family, though I don't know many of you.

Just give it time, be yourself, and meet some nice people!
Hopefully it'll get better for you with time! :)

College is the place where you get to be you and not have everyone judge you (at least around here). Some point in life you realize there are bigger things to worry about than appearances and your own preconceived notions.

Have fun and don't think you have to change for anyone.

The first day of ANYTHING always sucks. Simple as that.

I agree with Slaz on this one though. Be yourself, try to make friends...and as much as you won't want to hear this (because I didn't when I started 3 years ago either), don't count on your old ones. They're doing their own thing as well, and while it's fine to hang out, don't neglect everything new for them.

As for the "judgmental" thing...it happens. Don't wear all black tomorrow? If that's who you are, then go ahead and do it, but don't pretend to be someone else. Parlay any Bieber insult into a joke and let it pass. First impressions are tough to overcome sometimes, but they certainly can be if you're willing to try.

I've never had a correct first impression.

What I'm trying to say is anyone I thought I didn't like upon first meeting them, if I spent enough time with them and got to know them I have ALWAYS ended up liking them.

Are you living on a campus or commuting? If you're commuting it is going to feel a lot like glorified high school no matter what.

At any rate, as has already been said, just give it some time. You'll get more comfortable, I would bet money that most of the other new students felt the exact same way.

the time flys by, dont worry im starting high school this year and im also scared since not many people i know are going to it, but i know i will get used to it. good luck!

Thanks guys. I know it'll get better, I just wanted to share.

To Spitfire, I go to Community College, but I plan to transfer to a 4 year UC or State college.

and Jeod yeah I know I plan to wear only little black and the rest is a color. But it also was an accident d: plus the Bieber thing is just...so annoying after the 500th time.

College can be tough man. After my 4 years of College, all I can say is focus on the end goal - graduating with a degree. Don't focus on the minor stuff like how people look at you, just make it your goal to do better than them, so you can get a better job, and make more money ;)

At the end of the day, people will probably want to get to know you if you give them a chance. I was mute my first couple years of College, but after that, I opened up and made quite a few friends. Old friends will probably fall off to the side if you aren't truly close, it is very disappointing (I am still disappointed), but such is life. You also want to communicate with your professors; not too much, not too little .. enough so they know you, know where you stand, your difficult areas, and where you excel. From my experience, Professors will want to help you succeed.

Good luck, and have fun! The years will literally fly by.

Thankyou Burn. I only have to be there 2-3 years instead of 4, but I know I will succeed.

When I say 4 .. I was only supposed to be there for 2. :facewall:

Keep your head in the game! Steer clear from parties, girls, gaming, lazy friends...etc. They all took a tole on me; caused me to skip classes or keep putting off homework.

Dude, I rocked in High School .. College messed me up for the longest time. If you keep your head on straight, you'll go places (Like some of my friends).

You only live through college once, make the best of it. Make friends, join the gym, talk and sit next to cute girls. It's the best thing I've ever done with my life.

The best advice I ever received when I started...ALWAYS GO TO CLASS!!

Good Luck. I'm sure you'll do great!

(Looking back, that was 10 yrs ago :( Where did the time go?)

Dude chill out 3 years is plenty of time to get to learn people.. Everybody's a bit shy in the beginning but when you get to know someone. It probably wont take more than a couple of days before you get some new friends.

And tbh.. As long as you do the most important stuff you'll move on and be able to get a job and such. Have fun, party and w/e.

Atleast that's what both my parents tell me. They both did this and have VERY good jobs.

What you are probally feeling is called the "spotlight effect" its where you feel like everyone in the room is watching and judging you because you feel like they should be for some reason. In reality this is not often the case. Imagine if you were one of them and watched yourself walk into the classroom. The truth is that most likely very little people in the class paid too much attention to you.
sry, I'm a psych major :P
Just keep on being who you are, you'll get through it.

Wikipedia will save you! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attribution_(psychology)#Spotlight_effect_error

Yeah that makes sense too. But if you feel confident in yourself, (get a new haircut, wear nice clothes, get swole etc) people will feed off your aura literally, people can sense who's confident and happy, ESPECIALLY girls and that will get you new friends. When you're shy, you get paranoid and think everyones looking at you and stuff. Trust me, they're not. Ease up and be confident.

Lol. Thanks guys. I'm fine really, I'm doin better, and Scion I am. Plus its stressful cause at home I'm getting badgered to get a job, but then she says well focus on starting school, then expects me to apply for something, Mom is just making it harder.

The best way to "shirk" off any negative feelings, either from yourself or from classmates, is to start making straight A's.

Straight A's will (help) lead you to success.
