Germany lifts Doom sales ban after 17 years

Doom's blocky graphics are now surpassed by those on modern mobiles

A German ban on selling Doom to teenagers has been lifted after 17 years.

The classic video game was put on an index of controlled titles in 1994 as it was deemed likely to harm youth.

Like pornography, sales of the violent shoot 'em up were restricted to adult-only stores.

The rules have been relaxed because officials believe that Doom is now only of artistic and scientific interest and will not appeal to youngsters.

However, one version of the game remains on the index because it features Nazi symbols on some levels.

Sadistic violence

The restrictions on Doom and Doom II officially expired on 31 August following a meeting of the Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons (Bundesprufstelle) earlier in the month.

The Bundesprufstelle reportedly decided to reconsider the game's status following an appeal by Bethesda Softworks, the current owner of iD Software, which created Doom.

Bethesda argued that the game's crude graphics had been surpassed by many modern titles and, as a result, the violence it depicted had far less of an impact.

In a document detailing its reasons, the Bundesprufstelle said its original decision was not solely based on the graphic quality of the game, although it noted that most mobile phones now supported far more realistic images.

The panel explained that it was originally concerned because the story played out in Doom involved a relentless cycle of gunplay and "bloody sadistic" violence that was not balanced by other scenes.

In an email to BBC News, a spokesman for the Bundesprufstelle said the key question it asks is whether a game contains "drastic portrayals of violence directed against human or human-like beings".

They added: "If the game then does not contain any real alternative scenes which might on the whole 'neutralise' the violent parts, then the game is likely to be found to have a harmful effect on minors."

The Bundesprufstelle said it had relaxed the restrictions because Doom was now "mainly of historical interest" and was far less likely to be played by children. Not least, it added, because much more realistic and challenging games were more widely available.

Some members of the Bundesprufstelle panel wanted to keep the restrictions in place but were outvoted by those deeming it acceptable.

If Doom goes on sale in Germany it will still only be available to those aged 16 or over.

The adults only rule was beginning to look like an anomaly because other versions of Doom games, such as one for the Game Boy Advance, had previously been approved in Germany.

Restrictions on "Doom II - Hell on Earth" have also been lifted.

However, the panel decided to maintain controls on the American version of Doom II because it incorporates two levels from Wolfenstein 3D which makes use of Nazi symbols including swastikas.

i play this on my phone - and it was one of the first games i played on my computer, seventeen years ago. wow - i've been gaming for WAY to long.

Yeah, I don't think my computer would be able to run games that old.

Actually, I tried to play it last week (after I saw the video of the dad singing the doom song while waking his kid up with a super soaker) and the graphics screwed up on me 5 seconds into it.

I haven't tried it with Palette Stealer Suspender, which is a program I use while playing Age of Empires II to fix the graphics. It would probably work with that.

I still play the original doom on my pc.

Its a windows port for the original doom and doom II. Think you need the .WAD files for the games though.

You can buy the trilogy through steam (I'm not into the whole torrent scene anymore and all the shareware website sketch me out lol that's why I bought them)

lol doom never gets old....and I can't play on nightmare, the respawning of dead monsters drives me crazy, I have to play it on ultra-violence lol

Ultimate Doom is on steam for like 4 bucks. Which is just Doom but with the best community levels and newly completed unreleased levels included.

video game bans are kind of dumb in my opinion. i can understand not wanting to sell very violent games to children but out right banning them is stupid to me?

i don't live in Germany but do they censor movies as harshly? i know many modern violent or even somewhat violent video games have blood removed or replaced (if im not mistaken German version of Tf2 has no blood and when they explode gears and springs come out to insinuate they are robots and not people)

Ah Doom, the game which gave me nightmares for several months!

Lets not forget rescue rover, those levels were a nightmare!

Good thing we don't have to play that lame version lol.

The same company that made DOOM also made Wolfenstein...which had a lot of Nazi stuff in it (characters, banners, ect.)

Today if you travel to Germany and utter so much as "SEIG HEIL" (hail victory) they will throw your ass in jail! They don't screw around when it comes to Nazi stuff, so that's why they banned it.

Doom was guilty by association lol.

I used to play DOOM on my NES.. Four years ago.. Don't make fun, I had a PS2 aswell.

Because Call of Duty 2 was so popular across the globe Activision actually made a "German-Approved" version of it so it could be sold in Germany. The version excluded all Nazi propaganda off the walls, swastikas on the Nazi uniform and blood. I believe it took a year for Activision to release the version after the "normal" version release date. I knew some people in an old clan who told me about this and how they went and bought the "illegal version" in France and some went to the UK to get it o.O

The punishment if you were caught by police with it was jail time. Extreme? Maybe a little bit but the law is the law and German popo don't mess around lol
