Aftermarket VGA Cooler for HD 5850

So got a 5850, fans dying. I woke up to a train going through my room, now I know there was something wrong because there were no train tracks in the county I was in so thought well got the computer on lets see whats going on...

Yeah its the VGA fan... sad face...

Cant send the card back because its an engineering sample that AMD gave me.

So card works fine, fan doesn't.

Looked on NewEgg for VGA coolers and found these two:

Which should I go with? Or is there a better one out there that I missed. Has to be under 55$ like the two above. No liquid cooling coolers.

And yes Id rather spend 55$ from throwing out a ~$400 video card.
 
The Arctic cooling has a better reputation as a VGA cooling company.

The Arctic cooling fans are quieter 20dB compared to 26db

The Gelid has better airflow 67.14 vs 54

It's gonna be sound vs performance so i would choose based on which you would perfer more

Yeah both have about equal ratings which makes it harder to choose.

I can't see into my case... its a workstation case so aesthetics is the least of my worries.

I can personally vouch for the Twin Turbo Pro. I have two on my crossfire 6850s and Furmark gets to 75C, but I never cross 70C in game. You would get even better temps since you only have the one card. Not to mention that even at 100% fan speed, I can't hear them over my case fans. It's a solid buy and I don't regret them one bit. I also think I found a deal at superbiiz and got them for ~$35 a pop, so shop around.

I also know people who were satisfied with the Gelid Icy Vision and also the Zalman VF3000A. I guess just buy whichever looks better/matches your color scheme? Might also look into how good the customer support is. I'm pretty arctic cooling has none, but Zalman is a well-established company, they may have good rep.

Except that more airflow doesn't necessarily mean better performance. A quiet fan with a more efficient heatsink can give you better temps than a better fan with a crappy heatsink. Not to say the TTP is necessarily better, but that just judging by specs alone isn't smart. This is made worse since a lot of companies, and especially fan companies, will outright lie about their specs.

Oooh didn't see that Zalman, nice catch there. I'll be having two 5850's because I told AMD that Sapphire (Card's manufacturer) wont accept cause of the serial (cause its an engineering sample) so they're sending me another hopefully and I get to keep this "dead" one... yay XFire'd 5850s ...

Like a pet rock, I too can vouch for the Arctic Cooling ATT Pro. I have it on my HD 5870 (same problem, dying fan) and it works very very well. Even at 100% fan speed, the fans are virtually inaudible, even if your case/fans are dead silent. Heat dissipation is superb, and functionality of the cooler is fantastic.

Performance is adequate. I saw a temperature drop of 2-3c overall. Nothing to write home about, but it does its job perfectly. Also, consider that both fans combined are virtually silent at full speed and it does a better job than the stock solution at cooling the card.

The only con that I have about the cooler is that is takes up 3 slots, which means it takes up the 2 slots that your current card takes up plus an additional slot on top of that. If that's going to be a problem, consider RMA'ing the card.


All in all, I'm very happy with the Arctic Cooling ATT Pro. What's impressive is that the cooler is only "rated" for 120 watts of dissipation, but it is severely underrated. It can cool my 5870 perfectly, which is way over 120-watts.

Get the ATT Pro. You won't regret it. :thumbup1:

Can't RMA the card, its an engineering sample aka if it dies you're on your own. But I have the ASUS P6T so theres the mid PCIe slot that can have the AM cooler card and the upper slot for the regular cooler. So space isn't a problem thankfully.

I'd say go for it. Just make sure you have a second set of hands when installing The AC ATTP if you get it. Getting the mounting bracket lined up with the cooler is somewhat tricky otherwise.
 
Hmm, I didn't have a problem installing it. And since you'll have two, make sure there's actually room for a 3-slot cooler.

I'm also surprised you only saw a 2-3C drop, mad pistol. My idles dropped by more than 10C and load temps dropped upwards of 15C. In addition to the absolute silence I get out of them. Maybe you had a really good non-reference cooler? Or the install suffered?

I had the 2nd generation reference cooler, which had the fan in the middle. It worked better than the blower-style cooler, but the performance wasn't spectacular.

Also bear in mind that an HD 6850 uses significantly less power than an HD 5870. Because of that, the cooler that was originally on the 5870 was already much more beefy than the one on a stock 6850.

And trust me, the AC ATT Pro is working on my card just fine. The way you know is by touching the heatpipes on the cooler. If they're hot, they're doing their job.
