Can't update iOS

I have my iPod touch 3G and I need help trying to update it so I can buy the app minecraft I have the iPod version 4.2.1 and I want to upgrade atleast to 4.3.1 so I can play minecraft. What I have done so far is gotten on iTunes and tried to update it there but it had a combatability error and it wouldn't let me upgrade and it says it is on the newest version which it is obviously not because they already released iOS 5 so hopefully someone can help me figure out why this is happening to my iPod please and thanks.

Sorry, but "nothing past 4.2.1 was released for the 3G. Aside from iOS5, you didn't get 4.3, 4.3.1, 4.3.2 or 4.3.3."

Basically what bam had said. I think they're no longer doing projects with 3G products or anything below that (2G, etc), other than 3GS.

You cannot, I don't know about iPod devices but my iPhone 3G cannot be upgraded past 4.2.1, which is the final build for 3G devices.

If you have an iPod touch third generation (same timeframe as the 3Gs), then you should be able to update. Note, however, that if you have an 8GB model from that timeframe, it is still a second generation device. Based on the error you are having, it sounds like you probably have a second generation iPod (which has the same updating issues the iPhone 3G has as mentioned above)

If you do have a third generation iPod, the only thing I can recommend is a restore, but those can take quite a while, and is not 100% guaranteed to resolve the issue.

is it the 8GB one?

the 3G 16/32/64 models had the 3GS processor (600somethng MHz) whereas the 8GB has the older 2G processor (422MHz), and thus is the same as the iPhone 2G and iTouch 1G, and ineligible for iOS5
