Hey guys, I was inspired to talk about my love for retro gaming with the goal of starting some great discussion and reminiscing of some amazing old games.

To that end I've composed a list that was surprisingly tough to make: My top 10 SNES games. What's a great about a list like this is while it is somewhat true for me, everyone had a different experience and opinion and there were SO MANY good and great games on this system.

So that being said here are my top 10 SNES games and a short little blurb about why I like them. If I am 100% honest, only #1-#3 are fixed and the other ones may shift. I kept myself to only 3 honorable mentions otherwise this post would never end. And yes, after making this list I did realize some great games were left off it (I'm sorry Mario Kart! :( ) Here goes!

#10 - Mega Man Soccer

What's this? Talk about an unusual game! Take several characters from the iconic Mega Man series, put them together and have them play...soccer? A strange premise maybe, but this light hearted game proved to be tons of fun. With the Blue Bomber himself, Proto Man and tons of favorite boss characters, each with special attacks, this game is a hidden gem and is pure fun.

#9 - Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen

LIBERATION! A strategy and role playing game turned into one. This game has so much DEPTH! One sentence doesn't even do it justice, THIS GAME HAS SO MUCH DEPTH! There was so much you could do, and there were right and wrong ways to do it. You never knew what to expect, you just knew it was great and you were in love.

#8 - Super Mario RPG

Squaresoft and Nintendo teamed up to put Mario in...a role playing game? Yes RPG games were a heavy influence in my youth. However silly this premise was though, those willing to try it out were rewarded with an amazing game full of unique functions and great Mario humor. And the music, oh man the music!

#7 - Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball

I may still argue that this was the best baseball game ever made. Smooth presentation, catchy music, this game had it all! Real teams but Ken Griffey Jr. was the only "real" character. One of the funniest things were all the names of every other player available. They were all references to other movie actors, TV characters, movie characters. It was hilarious to try and catch them all. Not to mention all the silly animations, did anyone else repeatedly run into the warning track just because it was funny?

#6 - Final Fantasy III (VI)

Is it the best Final Fantasy ever? This is a source of much debate between fans of the series. This was the third Final Fantasy game to be released in the US, yet the sixth game in the series as a whole. Incredible doesn't even begin to describe it. 14 different characters with fleshed out stories. You at least cared for 12-13 of them! Nobody likes Relm. And that villain, Kefka...oh didn't like him from the moment you met him. My favorite character was Sabin, who was yours?
 
#5 - Mega Man X

There is a humorous video on Youtube that so perfectly explains what is amazing about this game. As the Mega Man experience started to hit uncertain times, the franchise was revitalized in a new direction with Mega Man X. The first one was amazing and set a great pace with a new story and a "new" hero, X.

#4 - Donkey Kong Country

Donkey Kong Country! There is so much that is cool about this game that I don't even know where to start. It was graphically amazing for the time. This game pushed the SNES to its limits like no other game had done before. There were tons of secrets (did you find all 101?). There was even a cameo by the original Donkey Kong, known now as crotchety old Cranky Kong. And who could forget that thrilling boss fight against King K Rool?

#3 - Secret of Mana (Chrono Trigger)

I know what you're about to say. "Spitfire'd, you listed two different games here, why?" It seems to me that everyone who has played one of these games is completely divided on the other one. People who played Secret of Mana and didn't play Chrono Trigger will swear by Secret of Mana, and people who played Chrono Trigger and didn't play Secret of Mana will do the same for Chrono Trigger. Me? I fell on the Secret of Mana side. A truly great game with some of the best music you'll find on the SNES. Now don't get me wrong, I do recognize that Chrono Trigger is a great game, just saying I didn't play it. I try to respect the controversy here, not choose a side.

#2 - Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Watch out Cuckoo! What a great game! The music, the story, the graphics, the puzzles...Link's third outing was anything that can be used as a synonym for spectacular. So many secrets, so many easter eggs. This game is tons of fun and anyone who has played it knows exactly what I am talking about. It's a secret...to everybody!

#1 - Super Mario World

In my opinion, this is the best game on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Even now, my family is borrowing my Wii. When I go home to visit them and have some spare time to turn the Wii on, this is the game I come back to time and time again. I can play it time and time again. The levels never get old, the music is timeless, the fun is never ending. Favorite levels, Yoshis, Star Road, the Koopa Kids, there is so much that is great about this game that it is hard for me to put any other game above it.

Honorable Mentions: (Reminder: I'm limiting myself to 3 otherwise this thread will never end!)
Super Metroid - Sorry I never played it that much, doesn't mean I don't respect it tons though
Rock N Roll Racing - The racing, the music, it's great!
Sim City - Yeah it's a port, but for some reason I love it on the SNES over other version.

And that my friends is my list. What do you think? Let's talk about some of the games on this list. Or share your top 10 SNES list. There were so many amazing games on this great system that I know I have left many out that deserve a mention or a spot. I'm excited to see your feedback and relive some great gaming memories that we have undoubtably shared in over the years of this superb console.

off the top of my head (its been a long time sence i played my snes): super mario rpg 7 stars and link to the past
 
Also off the top of my head:

1) A Link To The Past - The pinacle of the SNES IMO. The fact that Miyamoto-san has stated that he want's to remake this makes me so very, very excited.

2) Super Mario All-Stars - Remakes of Mario Bros. 1-3, plus the Lost Levels. I list this so high up because the Mario games are so much fun, and this particular version's 2-player mode provided my brother and I with endless hours of fun.

3) Super Metroid - Just a very good game. Kind of established what Metroid is all about, combining both the gameplay and the narrative for the first time. If you play any of the modern Metroid's (like Fusion or Other M), all their stories link back to SM and the tale of the Baby Metroid and Samus.

4) Chrono Trigger - If this isn't my favorite RPG of all time, it's certainly up there.

5) NBA Jam - Again, me and my brother didn't really even like basketball, but loved the over-the-top aspects of this. My roommates and I actually have the new version downloaded on our XBox, and our term grades suffer because of it.

The amusing part about this picture for me is that it could be mistaken for an actual Mariners game from the last few seasons. XD

/still wishes the Seahawks were playing
 
What no Super Metroid? :( FF3 was a good one for the list, I totally forgot I bought it on the wii VC. Thanks for reminding me Spitfire, I can probably hold the wii controller good enough to play that one :blushing:
 
@NintendoDude: You proved my point. Super Mario All-Stars and NBA Jam - GREAT GAMES! I forgot them. I bought the 25th anniversary Mario All-Stars for the Wii this year and it is as great as ever. And NBA Jam, oh man the good memories just keep coming!

@Lemming LOL! I actually didn't see the score I was looking for a picture of an angry batter, because that was what made me laugh the most about this game.

@IrateDonnie: I bought the "remake" on the Game Boy Advance a few years ago, but oh man am I still tempted to buy it (again) on the Wii VC and then again on my PSP. Just a great great game. The Opera scene is one of my all-time favorites of any scene ever!
 
Super Metroid, Legend of Zelda, Kirby Super Star, Mario Allstars, Super Mario World 2 and Earthbound the best games on SNES
 
Too many to count for me.... Have a lot of Sega, Atari and a lot of other games/game systems lol
 
Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi I'm a Star Wars fan...and this was an awesome game! Also worth noting was that a novice could play and beat this game, as compared to the expert level stuff in Super Star Wars: A New Hope.

Super Mario 3 I'll readily admit that between this Mario game and the green and black one released with the original 5lb Gameboy, these were my first Mario games and by far my favorites for the longest time.

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Oracle of Seasons: Up until these two games for the Game Boy Color, I had not been a Zelda person. Then I got these two and was hooked.

@Smash: Earthbound. There's another one I never played. I've only heard good things about it though.

@MacArthur: Oh man, the entire Super Star Wars Trilogy was great! I think by today's standards those are incredibly hard games! You're right though, A New Hope was the hardest of the three!
 
My favorite have to be Donkey Kong Country and Zelda a link to the Past. Even though I only played them on the GBA, never had a SNES because I'm too young.
 
I can't believe no-one mentioned Mortal Kombat. One of the best games ever. Killer Instinct was also good, Street Fighter, Donkey Kong, Mega Man, Super Mario, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Those are all that I can think of off the top of my head for the moment.

I'm pretty sure I remember getting to the Sand Crawler platforming level...and never any farther. It also took me forever to figure out how to get Luke's speeder across the desert to the crawler without dying.

That being said, the Return of the Jedi was a favorite just because I could choose between different characters!

Also, what did everyone think of Kirby: The Crystal Shards for N64? I thought in many ways that was the culmination of all things Kirby.

It was good I'm not a huge fan of Kirby, and did anyone own Harvest Moon for nes I loved and played that game for like 5 years it seems.
