Solid state drives

I have noticed that a few people on our forums have gotten these ssd's. I currently have my primary hard drive partitioned to 50gb & the rest is a separate partition. I learned a massive lesson bout how to properly partition the primary hard drive the hard way (no pun intended). So my question is, with all these plug-ins & stuff needed for browsers today, would it be better to go with a 64gb ssd or go big with like a 100-120gb ssd? Im hoping as soon as I hear bout this job (which hopefully will be sometime this week), then I can set aside $$ towards getting the ssd (strictly for os of course). Any thoughts or ideas bout this?

If you're getting an SSD strictly for your OS, 64GB is plenty of room for your OS, browsers, and slower programs/applications.

Arguably, you could get away with a 32GB drive if you trimmed Win7 down a bit. At the rates they're going right now, though, I think a lightning-fast 64GB SSD would be right up your alley. Maybe a Crucial M4? I own one (I'm running off it right now) and it's beautiful.

For strictly the OS? 64GB would be fine. Just make sure you set it up properly (install all of your other programs to a different drive), else you'll run out of space fast.

Why not just go for 120/128GB? SSDs are getting awesome prices nowadays, I actually just bought a Mushkin Chronos 120GB for only $99 yesterday.

I just picked up a Crucial M4 128GB drive for my os drive, and to be honest I'm not sure how I ever lived without it. They are pretty reasonable these days, got mine on amazon for about 140 after tax (and free 2 day shipping with my Prime account) well worth it. Just don't forget to switch to AHCI mode in your bios if you do get one.

I just did some research & Crucial released another 64GB ssd that has the same specs as the $90 one, but includes a 3.5" adapter bracket, but for $5 less. It only has 3 5-egg reviews, but I figured id let you guys know bout that. If anything, im gonna after that $85 version (no need to spend extra money on an adapter bracket unless my case came with em, which I gotta look into).

OP, before you install Win7 on your ssd, make sure to update the firmware beforehand so you don't risk any problems. Also make sure to go into bios and change your sata from IDE to AHCI.
Lastly, you would want to move your pagfile to your hdd so you have more room on ur ssd

You can do that by:
To change page file settings in Windows 7:

In the Start Menu search box, type "Advanced System Settings" and choose the Control Panel applet that should show up, "View advanced system settings"

Under "Advanced" tab, "Performance" section, click "Settings..."

Under "Advanced" tab, "Virtual Memory" section, click "Change..."

These are the actual settings. Uncheck "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" Highlight the drive you want it on, and select either a fixed size or system managed size, and then click "Set". YOU HAVE TO CLICK THE SET BUTTON. Do the same to remove it from the drive you don't want it on. ("No paging file".)

Click OK, OK, OK, and you should be prompted for a reboot.

This will save you some gbs depending on your vram & ram
