I think some of you are missing Hansom's point. He seems be questioning why we don't allow censored swears like on TV. Its a valid question that has been answered by C-Whit. I think he gets the point that this was considered by eGO leadership years ago and a determination was made not to allow it. Personally I agree; to me, a censored swear is still a swear.

Please note that Hansom has not threatened to violate the rule, nor has he stated an intention not to play on our servers if that remains the rule.

Regarding Quaffer's post, I think nine out of ten admins would have no idea what you were saying, lol.

If I were in game and I keyed my mic and said:

"You are a very unpleasant person with the character of a poltroon. I find your behavior to be lacking in manners, and your intelligence to be infinitesimal."

You're a jerk (very unpleasant person) and a coward (poltroon). You're rude (lacking in manners) and an idiot (intelligence to be infinitesimal).

See kiddies. Learn all of those big words and you can defame with impunity.

Just not on an eGO server.

Is it weird that i understood it before he had to explain it? o.O

Do you actually talk like that in real life? Must be impossible for you to do things if no one understands you.

I believe if you read a few of my threads you will find that I can make myself understood just fine. You can find them on my profile by clicking on my avatar.

I once spent five years working for NASA as a contractor. Did you know that anything written for astronauts is to be written at the sixth grade level. Did you know that most astronauts hold at least one masters degree, often two and frequently doctorates as well?

I always thought the sixth grade rule was foolish.

When you speak you have to consider your audience. But here's the thing. If you always assume people are incapable of understanding anything but the simplest thing, If everyone did that, we would soon find ourselves in a world of gibbering idiots.

I'll admit my post was over the top. I was trying to make a point and have a little fun being pompous at the same time. But I do believe it is better to let your listener stretch their horizon than it is to talk to them as if they were a small child.

Most of the people I work with have doctorates in engineering or physics. Maybe I'm just spoiled.

Just FYI =):

The 6th grade rule is a universal, or I should say a States-Wide, general consensus on the level of difficulty we should use to communicate to the general public. It's not specific to any one field.

For example, we use the 6th grade rule in medicine to speak to our patients. Moreover, all newspapers in the United States uses a 6th grade reading level as their general "rule-of-thumb" as to not go "over the heads" of their readers.

If we used the 6th grade rule in professional music, Lady Gaga would be singing "Three Blind Mice" dressed as Little Red Riding Hood.:crying:

Seems bizarre that your newspapers use 6th grade language, in the UK it's where you'll find the most bombastic.

Also, do you mean that that type of language is natural to you? So if you were shopping, or ordering a pizza, you don't make a concerted effort to simplify it, you just let your listener stretch their horizon?

Oh dear mother.... glad that rule does not applying to our profession!

You mean to tell me that lady gaga DOESNT sing 3 blind mice? to me she sounds like children's music anyways :)
