10 Tips for Good Sniping

If you are good at tracking, then you should use smg and club. If not, the jarate is a good second option.

This is what I did in order to get better at Sniping (both in TF2 and in CS):

Weapon:

  • Instead of using the most powerful Sniper rifle (whether it be the Machina or AWP) go ahead and use something a little weaker. By using a weapon that is weaker it helps build the one area that will be most deadly; head shots. Even the weakest of weapons are still powerful when aimed right at the temple. And honestly, this is the first step I started doing in order to get better at the Sniping class.

Distance:

  • Play maps that require you to be shooting and further and further distances. Maps that allow players to be rather close to one another doesn't provide enough difficulty in aiming the weapon. The farther away the enemy is, the more you have to be able to aim properly for those deadly shots (i.e. head shots). By practicing with farther and farther targets you actually hone the ability to quickly lock on the enemy at closer ranges then attempting the other way.

Patience:

  • This is key and cannot stress it enough. A lot of players think that quickly jumping out of a corner will give you a better advantage; it actually does the opposite. If you were to simply jump out of the corner (without taking into account the variety of places the opponent could be) then you've left yourself trying to find the player. If instead, you took the time to determine prime areas the player could be hiding, you'd have a better chance at picking him at the dome. The more patience you have, the worse off the other player will be.

Movement:

  • You might be thinking that this has to do with your movement, but in reality, its the movement of your opponent that should be the main focus (you can worry about your position and movements after knowing his). Every player (regardless of the class they choose) will have a sort of movement to them when they fire. Some people move side-to-side, some move forwards and backwards and others crouch upon firing. Paying attention to their movement will help you get a better handle on where to fire, and hopefully, help you land more crits. At the same time pay attention to your movement as well. If you see you're doing the same movement (i.e side-to-side) then try to mix it up by crouching when your fire a shot. Anything to throw your opponent off fromt memorizing your movements is helpful too.

Fun:

  • Last but surely not least, just remember to have fun. It's a game. Sometimes you get a day where you're on fire and others where you're not. Beating yourself up over it will not help improve your game play - it only hinders it.

Welp, those are my pointers and hope they help someone!

Long post.

Cool stuff Skyline.

For the record, the AWP is just a reskin of the stock rifle. It does nothing to increase any stats.

I don't know if anybody else does this, but when zooming in for a shot, moving my scope and my position in accordance to where the target is going seems to make my accuracy a lot better as I can move the scope less. (That or Tribes gives me that habit since sniping at tiny targets on big maps while the targets move at 100s of KPH pretty much requires that you move with the target.)

Okay, okay.

It's just I have an extreme distaste for the sleeper. That's all. Sorry I was disrespectful. The last part was over the top.

That being said,

1.Alright.

2. I meant quickscoping.

3. Er, what do you mean? You can fire during the whole process of scoping in.

4. Yup, just like 150 damage every second with a bit of aim.

This is just my method, but I stay scoped in and hidden until full charge(if I know there are buffed up opponents), but usually I just stay scoped in until I find a head. I have a hard time doing all that jumping crap, but I tend to twitch aim.

It mainly comes down to reflexes.

One thing in my config I use is zoom_sensitivity_ratio "0.3" It makes it so that when you zoom in, it drops your ingame sensitivity to 30%. This helps me in I can aim close to the head before I zoom in, then I can adjust when I'm zoomed in.

Might try this out.

What you doing here scrub?

Pff, I can kill $nake with my rocket launcher. I think he's worth more than any other sniper ;)

Welcome to eGO new generation where snipers are easy kills for easy solly ;)
You have never played with Nik and Codo.

Nik and Roflcopter are the kings of Sniper. I aspire to be renowned like them.

Snark haunts my nightmares... I used to be able to hang with him, but I stopped sniping for a few months and now he makes me cry...

HOW CAPS LOCK SNIPES

1.) Annoy people
Sometimes I just single out one person, headshot them, and taunt everytime. ;D

2a.) Stock sniper + jarate + bushwaka = good
don't use the bushwaka you'll take extra fire damage and won't have jarate to put yourself out. I die a little inside every time I see a snipe using a SMG with their bushwaka.

2b.) SMG + Sashahashahshana = also good
If you're low on health the Sashananana will do extra damage + the only time you ever actually need to melee is when you have no other choice.

3.) Machina is okay
If you can still aim at heads it's okay. SMG is good with machina though since you can't noscope.

4.) Bodyshots are okay
Besides in comp it doesn't matter you got the kill anyway.

5.) tr_walkway = bad sniping practice
Hitboxes are completely off. All of bots are in civilian mode so some bots have their head hitbox right above their model.

6.) Don't play the sniping minigame
The one where there are two snipers just dueling it out. Someone is going to come in, and kill one of you.

7.) Try listening to music
I often get 4k, 5k, quickscopes, and airshots when listening to my iTunes collection.

8.) DON'T try to be pR0 and get dem flick quickscopes
Actually take a second to line up those shots (I learned this the hard way). This includes when someone is up in your face. LINE UP THE SHOT.

9.) Medics are at the top of your kill list
It's worth eating several crockets to get a medpick

10.) Don't be the guy who switches to sniper after getting headshot, thinking I'M WAY BETTER THAN THIS GUY I'LL SHOW HIM

TL;DR gibus is dabes hat

3. No, you can't, there is a 0.2 second delay. The developers intentionally built this into the game from the very beginning so you can't just press right-click and shoot at the same time like in some other games for instant headshots.

4. Regardless of what weapon you are using, charging your rifle is not only practical, it's downright necessary for some situations. It makes no sense to always go for quickscope headshots, because not even the very best Snipers in the world can make the headshots on a completely reliable basis.
