Certain games won't launch. Black Screen + Hard Reboot.

This is a problem I have experienced for a long time now and I'm truly sick of it. I'm sick of not being able to play 40% of my steam games for well over a year now. GTA4, Red orchestra 2, ARMA 2.. Just to name a few.



Certain games will Fail to launch and will simply show a black screen that cannot be surpassed until I do a hard reboot.



Here's what I've done so far to attempt to solve the problem..



Ran the games in windowed mode or set the launch parameters to different resolutions. (Windowed mode works but the moment I attempt to set any type of resolution changes black screen then inevitable hard reboot)

I have tried several graphic drivers, I have completely uninstalled and removed any registry key entries or any remnants of any old drivers with driver fusion in safe mode..

I have reinstalled the games themselves likely ruling out any corrupt installs or whatever..

I have researched other similar problems but I've never really found a person with my GFX card who has the same problem.



I have attempted all this and any other obvious solutions.. No good. I'm running out of patience and at this point doing a fresh install of windows is looking better and better to me.

Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

Does it sound like the card is spinning up at all? As in - Does it sound like its trying to run the fans? Can you hear the fans on the card speed up? If not then its either a power supply issue or a graphics card issue. Your power supply might not be sending enough power to the card.

I have the same video card and do not experience this problem.

You have the extra power connection on it right? The four pin socket.
 
Wow my original post sounded derpy. I cannot believe I failed that bad. :P

Anyways. Check to make sure you have all your PSU connectors in the correct slot as ric said. If the problem persists it could be multiple things. Heating issues, Power issues, Graphics issues ect ect ect. Its hard to diagnose the issue without it being right infront of me.

Have you tried whipping out the hard drive and re-installing windows onto it?
 
Don't know if I should also post this but I'm getting similar problem except only with Chivalry: Medieval Warfare. My computer immediately turns off when I start a game.

Well, You never said any specs you have nor anything other then the computer shuts off. xD So unless you give us more info we cant really help.
 
MY brother went through this, with nearly identical specs (460 video card though). He couldn't Play most of his games because his CPU heated up extremely fast. To prevent damage, the computer refuses to let the game continue to run, and it hangs on the black screen

Clean out your case of all dust build ups. clean all the fans, and check the thermal paste on the cpu. Re apply some if its dried up.

His cps and gpu fans were so plugged with dust, they did not spin at all.

Dont' have the computer with me but it runs Win XP SP2. Graphics card is Intel HD 4000.
What it happens is I can start the game off in steam. It loads into the menu and stuff. When I press start training (which I suppose is to load the map and everything for the game), it shuts down immediately so...
Hopefully that is enough detail... :P
 
Thanks for the replies so far everyone. I spent another 2 hours researching potential fixes and trouble shooting earlier to no avail.


I'm apprehensive about this being a potential GPU power related issue. I don't believe my card to be over-heating and I do believe all 6pin connectors are plugged in properly but I will give it all a shot later on when I get home from work.

Any further ideas are very much appreciated. After the 2 hours spent trying to fix this crap earlier I was confident I fixed it but I got nowhere.

when you are at front of your pc please do the following for us;
- run dxdiag.exe

To open the DirectX Diagnostics Tool, proceed as follows:

From the Windows Taskbar, click on Start and select Run. (In Vista, press the Windows Logo-Key + R)

In the Open: field, type DXDIAG. Click on OK or press the Enter key on your keyboard. The program will begin to gather information about your system and the Diagnostics Tool will open with the System tab in the foreground.

NOTE: If your system is unable to locate a copy of DXDIAG , it most likely means that a recent version of DirectX is not installed on your computer. You may download a recent version of DirectX from the Microsoft web-site at the following address:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/Browse.aspx?displaylang=en&categoryid=2

There is a "Save Button" at the bottom which simply saves all the systems hardware/drivers in a text file, easily post-able along with your system specs. Post that info here for us, please.
