The only applications that I use frequently are firefox, vent, steam, teamspeak, and bittorrent. Those are all at the bottom on the toolbar.
The desktop has gotten a bit cluttered since I took that picture, but it's nothing a file inside a directory can't fix.

Study hard, go to a decent college (that doesn't cost a fortune), major in something that will land you a good job, get good grades, and get internships. Also pick a field that interests you, not just cause it pays well.

Also stay close to family/make friends that are like family. You need some sort of support structure to do this for when things go south, and they will.

*Edit: Not saying this is the only way, but it's what worked for me!
