We have been discussing limiting the assault class on Anzio, with the hopes to draw in more people. At the moment we are thinking that 6 assault classes per team would be the cut-off, and something that has it's pros and cons. We would like to know what you guys think about this and any ideas or concerns you may have with it.

Please answer the poll above and let us know why in this thread, if all you do is answer the poll we can use it, but we would rather have some reasons behind the votes as well.

This poll and thread will be open for the next 7 days, for you all to discuss. Please keep it professional at all times.

Based on the -50 point penalty with friendly fire, I think we should do away with FF and limit assaults.

Thanks for the thread Lung

I agree with this.

I voted yes in the poll since you said you're considering 6 per team. That seems like a fair set amount.

Limiting the assault class might make a difference, but I don't think that is the main issue with the map. I would have to go with FF. If you look at all our other servers, Anzio is the only one with FF enabled that is also the lowest ranked.

Great thread though Lung!

Six does seem like a fair amount, I voted yes. Also, just like what everyone else is saying, I think the main problem is friendly fire.

I would say limiting assault class should be fine. Though I do think 6 is a bit low. Perhaps 8-9 should be better.

Not every pubber/player would be good with rifle/support, and having at least 8 assault classes might make the server more friendly towards new-ish players.

I do not see this working however. Yes yes i use the Assault rifle blah blah. Many things could be changed and or edit, but however i do not get the feeling of this helping in the long run. The server just seems like its turning into a comp server or heck maybe even near a realism one. The server always was a bit...bumpy.

Another case raises, why not limit the support class too? That would seem fair and not "out to get" the assault class. The nice thing about limiting the support would be only the rifle class would be the unlimited one.

Now i would like to point to this...

8 would be fine, but the fact is most of the time you almost always see 8 assault classes.

That is very true. Anzio unlike the rest has FF on, plus the main turn off from most "point players" stay away because of their valued points that do not matter in anyway, but bragging rights.

Like i said their are many things that could be edited, however in the long run it simply comes down to more players. Which would mean DoD:s being in its glory days. It never hurts to try, but i do not think this would be a long term solution for Anzio being...popular.

I say no, what if pubbers want to use the assault class? On our other eGO DoD servers, we don't have the Assault class limited, so I don't think it should be limited on Anzio, even though I never touch that class.

I will concur with the others who mentioned Friendly Fire as something that should be re-evaluated. It can decrease traffic through the server because there are plenty of pubs that see the FF tag and move along.

In the same vein, limiting the Assault class would likely have a detrimental effect on our ability to attract and maintain the pub population.

I agree with Dutch 100%. Though, assault should be limited to what a REAL realism would have, which is usually 3-5 on 32 slot server. Keeping FF on, perhaps create a vote within the server to turn it on or off and have it reset to on after each restart. If that's too much, than at least decrease the TK points loss, or remove the ranking entirely. If this server truly was about fun, then the ranking should go without it.

Just my 2 cents.

Just in my opinion I don't see too much reason to limit assault, rarely do I see more than 4 anyways and I don't see it as much of a problem. I had to vote no for this one even though I do see the pros and cons. Regardless of whether the assault class is limited I still like the map and will do my best to fill it.

I dont see how limiting the assault class would do anything considering we never get players on there that are non-eGO. We start up the server, we play on it for two hours, it stays full, we leave, it empties out. Its the only server to do that. Its not because the assault class is unlimited because the majority of us who play it dont use assault anyways.
Maybe turning FF off might help, or reducing the point loss.

But leadership knows what I'd like to see happen, considering every two weeks we get a new thread talking about a certain map.

Unfortunately, Anzio like a lot of other things has become a useless waste of time and a burden to its members.

Anzio was the brainchild of one of the best members DoD has and ever will have-- Sumac.

The concept was to create a new niche for eGO in the form of an eGO run DoD Friendly Fire server, the first our organization has ever had. That dream took months to come to fruition because of problems that still plague eGO and DoD in particular. However, Anzio was ultimately released, saw a solid start, and was supported by the community.

Although we usually think of community support as a great strength, for Anzio it has become a weakness in several senses.

1. Anzio is only filled (normally half-filled at best) because of a dedicated bunch of DoD members who spam their friends list, put out announcements, and do an outstanding job of filling the server to the best of their abilities. Having been one of these people I can say that the task becomes tiresome and the responses to fill Anzio become less and less frequent. However, the members who do this should be commended on their perseverance and tenacity.

2. Successful servers don't rely on DoD members to thrive. While Donner and Avalanche have several eGO members on at all hours of the day, the vast majority of players are pubs. I don't think this fact is up for much debate; successful servers are successful because of pubs. Take a look at the player lists for our top servers and you'll find a solid 80% are pubs. Take a look at Anzio and you'll be hard pressed to find more pubs than eGO members.

3. Anzio is essentially a public eGO member's server. Want to wind down after an event and play with only eGO members? "Hey let's fill Anzio." I can't count the number of times I have seen a pub join, take a look at the overwhelming eGO presence then leave. Whether they think they interrupted a clan even or if they grew uncomfortable around an all admin team, most pubs leave Anzio soon after seeing the roster.

4. Changing a server's dynamics could help fill a server if it met the majority's wants or needs. By majority I mean the majority of people playing on the server (pubs), not the majority of votes in this thread. If a problem arises or a need is not met then it would be a solid decision to make a change to better the server. However, Anzio doesn't have a strong following of pubs and it isn't able to stay full no matter who or what happens in the server. The problem with Anzio never filing up is definitively NOT that there are 10 assault classes playing on one team.

In the past the machine gun class was blamed for emptying the server. Did limiting the class help the server stay full? No. Will changing the amount of assault classes help fill the server? No.

5. In the same lines as changing the server's dynamics, would changing Anzio to an FF off server help? Maybe. However, the main problem with Anzio is getting the server full and keeping it that way. While there are a lot of diehard Anzio fans, the server is still failing. The problem with DoD is that it is an old game with people who have been playing for years on servers they know and trust. Mostly, there is not an influx of new players who are tempted to try new servers. Many servers are FF, many allow cussing, and some of them are eGO servers. Most DoD players have a few servers they play on and rarely frequent from their favorites.

6. DoD has had to remove a lot of servers because they were failing. The Sniper server, Flash, Palermo (I think), Argentan, and Colmar. I probably missed a few. All of these maps died because we couldn't keep them full. Not because we didn't try, but because successful maps need to be filled by pubs. If you browse around you can find running servers of most of these maps. But why did ours fail while others thrived? Who know and who cares? We have successful servers and failing servers seem to drag our members and pubs away from other servers. "Hey let's fill Anzio" often means "Hey let's empty out Donner!"

Anzio has only been half successful (if even that) because it has been filled with a majority of eGO players. When our members leave the server it empties out. We have tried changing weapons classes before with no change and now the "best" option put forward by your leadership team is to further restrict weapons.

A lot of you know me and those of you who don't should know that I don't pussyfoot around a subject.

Anzio is a dead server, your leadership team is making an attempt to save it so when it does fail they can wash their hands of it., and who could blame them for trying? I say this because I have been a part of this before and you are all likely to see it again. I hope that your recommendations can save Anzio but it would be best if you added a fourth option to the poll that says "Take Anzio down so we can concentrate on servers that have a chance."

"Take Anzio down so we can concentrate on servers that have a chance."

I agree with EVERYTHING you said, accept this. Even though Anzio may be kind of hard to fill up, it is a good server to fallback on and try to fill if the other 4 servers are filled up. So, we shouldn't get rid of it.

As it pains me to say this, I agree with Stormy.
Thanks sis!

Avalanche #1 - Still in the #1 Spot!
Donner #14 - No Change
Strand #31 - Up 1 Spot
Kalt #52 - Down 2 Spots
Anzio #122 - Mixed up the events server's ranking and Anzio's

It may be better to drop Anzio for now, and focus on the other servers. Make sure they are within the top 25 or the top 30.
Donner, and Kalt have been sliding as of late, along with Anzio. Strand, if i am not mistaken, has been hovering around 30.

Once we make sure all the servers are popular and ok, then experimenting with maps or reviving Anzio/Flash/Colmar can be done without worrying.

Well, if the other 4 servers are filled up, then can't we just open the events server and run a regular map for a couple of hours?
At least until the main servers empty out a bit.

I don't think it is a class limited problem or even an FF problem. I see plenty of other servers with both of those that are full or near full most of the day.

To me the problem is with pubs not backing the server.

Don't know what you have to change. But any change should be done to better suit the server for pubs.

What is the down side of keeping Anzio? I would front the bill personally, unless there is some negative externality I'm unaware of.

What would happen if the Anzio server became a non-24/7 server and had a map rotation...omg :O

I think a map rotation would lead us back to the original problem. Once a map resets, most players are going to leave if the next map is unfavorable. I know that a lot of people have been wanting a Flash server again, what if we tried that and see what the results are?
